I have installed literally hundreds of HDMI cables, and if you are spending more than $20 for a 1m cable (or there abouts) then you are been ripped off and need to ask the morals of the person who sold you the cable.

Basic rules with HDMI, cables less than 3m, the gauge of the cables are quite small but not a problem. 3-10m cable gauge may increase, this is good, and to be expected. Cables over 10m and less than 30m then expect an equalizer at the receiving end this creates a cost point.

Avoid the super expensive monster type cables, its all marketing sh1t and you pay for nothing.

As a price guide if you are paying significantly more than the following prices then you are having your tit pulled, mind you some may find that appealing.

1M $20
3M $25
5M $35
10M $80
20M $180
30M $220

Also be aware that the HDMI tradename machine control who and what makes HDMI raw cable stock, there are not many sources, they are all controlled, this includes who supplies the likes of Monster, its all the same cable under the skin even if Monster put a think coat on it, bottom line is the above prices are what you should pay, if its more then you are being ripped, you have been warned.

Sadly HDMI seems to be a rich picking for shonky retailers.

Dunnersfella:
reven: same thing goes with those expensive power boards. the sales person asked if i wanted one when i bought my $6000 tv a few years ago, the way he said it, sounded like he was giving it to me for free. it wasnt until later i noticed i actually paid $200 for it.

sure i should have been paying more attention, thats my fault, but still. $200 for a powerboard is a joke, $300 for a 1.5m HDMI is highway robbery.

By power board, do you mean surge guard?
Or a $5 white board with an orange fuse button on the end?

Overload protection and surge protection are two different things.

I recently ran 2 10m ones when I wall mounted my plasma. They cost $40 each and work perfect. Buy a $10 one off trademe.

No offense but if you don't know what it is or what it does then how do you know it's not worth $200? sounds like your assuming that retailers always rip you off.

I know that HN sold me my Belkin surge protector for around half the sticker price and no it was not part of a bigger purchase. I would not pay full price for one but I also would not connect several thousand dollars worth of HT gear directly into a wall plug either.

Slightly off topic but something that I found. The one I have has a cable/satellite filter. I initially connected the TC cable though that filter and finished up having to remove it as it caused so much drop in the signal levels that we were having problems with the TC STB.

I've heard from Chorus staff that these often show to be a cause of poor broadband speeds in homes where they have the phone line fed through the surge protector also.

I've heard that too, altho it seems to make no difference to mine (avg download at 1.45Mb/sec) so I leave it plugged in. Altho I'm not worried if a surge damages my free telecom modem as it is rubbish.

back to original topic, My 2 $10 ea 1m HDMI cables from Trademe work fine with my setup.
