I'm just annoyed at the backwards step of moving high rating shows to the new SD channel. They have the space, so I think they should make it HD.

No wonder they have such poor uptake in HD when the TV networks are making such a half a$$ed effort.

On the topic of TV3+1. You'd think they'd crank up the bit rate a bit, it's often running at under 3mb/s

I don't really notice much difference between 3 and 3+1.
Is the difference in the sound output, not the video quality. Or is it both?

I also though C4 was outputting ok, but maybe I just need glasses (or so my Wife keeps telling me).

If they are just re-branding C4 to FOUR and leaving the quality as is, and moving shows over. I don't see the big deal. As I am enjoying C4 as is now anyway.

100% agree, putting some of the high rating shows which where in HD onto FOUR in SD is not good business sense

Being in the electronic service industry I know how sales are going at the moment with LCD/LED and Plasma TV’s they are huge especially with the cut throating going on at the moment, most TV’s now have Freeview built in. Being involved with PlayTV (PVR for the PS3) NZ sales since Christmas has also been huge. For any network to “compromise” it’s viewing quality is beyond me....

TV3 is Full HD - TV3+1 is standard definition
TV3 uses dolby 5.1 surround sound - tv3+1 uses plain old stereo. If you are just using your TVs speakers you wouldnt really notice a difference.

The perceived difference depends on the original program. If the original program was full HD they really look pretty stunning on tv3 and a bit drab (by comparison) on 3+1. If the original program was standard def - then they do digitally enhance it a bit on tv3 - so they dont look too bad - but the enhancement would be removed (or not visible anyway) on 3+1.

Soundwise, some programs/movies on tv3 are 5.1 surround sound - so if you have a home theatre that can sound pretty good - 3+1 just has plain stereo.

In a perfect world they would have every program going out in Full HD with surround sound - but I am just pleased they are making FOUR a bit like a 'normal' channel with shows on it - gives a bit more choice for the consumer.

I suppose the problem is most people are like my parents. They dont really care about HD vs SD. They just want to watch the shows they enjoy. Its more important that it works well than anything else.

I personally cant believe people pay for the crap picture quality on SKY. It looks really awful. Even Freeview SD stuff out does it on every level.
That said, another HD channel would be great. I really like how clear it looks. Watching Sevens now and it looks fantastic.

I'm afraid I can't vote yes for "we want it in HD". SD is good for me, I think the content is more important.

I sorta remember an interview the Morning Rumble on The Rock had with TV3 CEO Brent Impey when Freeview HD was about to be launched, they were discussing how TVNZ's focus was initially on new channels but Brent was saying TV3's focus was a strong push to HD hence the number of HD programs on tv3 vs what TVNZ has.
Just a pity they are not extending that focus to Four

keep it sd it will be fine as most of the shows that get copys of are filmed in hd but they get sd copy and a lot that they play is sd so i think they should stay hd i hate upscaled videos even tho they look fine still do not like this

Yes i believe so TVNZ have TV1,TV2 in 1080i and TVNZ6/7 in SD on one mux can't see why Mediaworks can't do it??

fail tvnz audio for all channels is 64 aac vbr and video bit rate is not much bigger then c4's that is why there able to have lots of channels

I do agree with the need for HD.

But, it does cost a lot in gear to switch over to HD. MediaWorks might be waiting to get more advertising revenue from FOUR so that they can afford to get HD equipment.

<Slightly Off Topic> Looking at the schedules I do notice that there are overnight informercials, and I would expect more commercials on the channel. Mediaworks is smart by doing this channel rebrand, as c4's music shows had hardly any ads in them. </Slightly Off Topic>

So I was just reading through some of the comments on the FOUR announcement article on the C4 website.

On the 4th page of comments there was the below comment from 'TV3 ADMIN'.

It could well be that it isn't actually a comment from the genuine TV3 ADMIN, and that someone has called themselves TV3 ADMIN just to stir things up.

Just thought it was worth a mention. Maybe there is hope? Or maybe just a troll?
Judging by the Unneeded Capitalization of some words, and terrible grammar, my bet would be a troll.

sbiddle: Have you seen Media Works' current balance sheet? If not you might want to look at it.

One thing us HD fans forget is that the vast majority of viewers still don't care about HD 5.1 content. Spending money that won't generate any extra return in revenue isn't a great business case.

But that's one the good things about real HD is DD 5.1 audio.
