mm1352000: I'd say we're close even if TVNZ or Mediaworks sublease. There is still a little space on the terrestrial network.

Terrestrial
------------
TVNZ: 3% (~800kbps)
Mediaworks: 10% (~2.6Mbps)
Kordia: 30% (~8Mbps)

Summary:
- there's basically no room on the TVNZ mux - they'll have to cut quality if they add AC3 for both TV One and TV 2 (TV 3 uses ~400kbps for AC3)
- there's possibly room for one more low quality SD channel on the Mediaworks mux. Alternatively (and preferably in my opinion) they could upgrade FOUR to HD if they cut quality a little on TV3 and TV3 Plus 1.
- there's not really enough room for another HD channel on the Kordia mux unless it is an upgrade from SD to HD (I'm looking at you Prime!!!). There should easily be enough room for 2 if not 3 SD channels considering current bitrates. Note that I'm not receiving tvCentral here, but I do receive ChineseTV and TV33 (total of 7 TV channels + 3 radio).

Satellite

12456H: 6% (~1.9Mbps)
12483H: 6% (~1.9Mbps)

Summary:
- there isn't really room for any more channels on either transponder - at least not at qualities I'd be interested in watching

How many more Radio Stations could you fit on each mux?

Just got home and check Stratos on my TiVo. It's there in CH 21 and 100 but still listed as the HD demo channel with no EPG. Hopefully this will be sorted come March 01.. They do need to go 16x9 as "fatovision" does not look nice..

Fair question - didn't even consider them!

Well, it is a bit hard to tell really since the the radio station bandwidth usage varies quite a lot from station to station. For example, on the Kordia DVB-T mux:

Radio NZ National: ~70 kbps
Radio NZ Concert: ~105 kbps
Base FM: ~55 kbps

On 12456H:

Radio NZ National: ~100 kbps
Radio NZ Concert: ~165 kbps
Niu FM (Testing): ~130 kbps
George FM: ~165 kbps
Base FM: ~165 kbps

[edit: numbers above don't include PMT overhead]

Given the numbers I quoted earlier and a rough estimate of 100 kbps for an HE-AAC terrestrial station and 175 kbps for an MPEG satellite station (including PMT overheads of ~15 kbps, and leaving ~400 kbps margin):

Stratos is (Finally!) switching to wide screen on March 1st!! This means every channel on Freeview Satellite will be in wide screen.

It looks a bit odd as it seems to currently be in 2.35:1 movie widescreen. Hopefully it wont stay that way.

I don't understand why someone would go to the enormous effort to run a television station only to broadcast half of that content with the aspect ratio messed up.

Doesn't look like true 16x9 to me on DTT. Every thing is in Fatovision.. The stuff that's in 4x3 should look that way and 16x9 should fill the screen

Yes, there are at least two more DVB-T muxes, but no other satellite transponders that I am aware of. From the Digital Futures discussion paper, 22 licences would be planned for as follows:

3 Main coverage licences (Freeview usage).

3 Infill coverage licences (Freeview usage).

6 Main commercial renewal licences (5 SKY, including PRIME and MTS, plus NZRB).

6 Infill commercial renewal licences (5 SKY, including PRIME and MTS, plus NZRB).

2 Main coverage commercial renewal licences (Kordia, no infill).

2 Unallocated (1 main, 1 Infill).

Note: count main + infill as one mux.

In the initial spectrum decisions:

176 MHz (in the 502 – 694 MHz frequency range) will be designated for digital television use after DSO

112 MHz (694 – 806 MHz) above 694 MHz will be designated for new cellular technologies after DSO.

Of the 176 MHz designated for digital television use:

96 MHz will be reserved nationwide for digital terrestrial television

The remaining 80 MHz will only be made available in areas where there is either existing or planned demand for digital terrestrial television.

So 96 MHz fits 12 licences, but only 6 main muxes. 3 of those muxes are the current Freeview muxes. The other 3? I'm not sure...

The other question is: how is the transmission going to be organised? MTS (Maori Television), the NZRB (NZ Racing Board - Trackside) and Prime are all currently transmitting on the Kordia mux, but they actually have the licences to be on their own muxes. I guess it is a case of sharing costs. That in turn leads to the question: who would be willing to pay for another mux to be turned on?

Yes, Optus D1 is full to the brink. I think Sky *might* have one unused mux, but that's it. It's hampering the growth of both Freeview and Sky right now.

Can't remember if Sky have any dibs on Optus D3 (sitting at 156E), or whether they just had it as backup.

It has its benefits though too. SBS***cough***...

I wouldn't have a clue about that, but I thought I saw a comment in the Sky forum recently about some testing that was happening on D3 at the time. Anyone got enough money to co-locate another satellite at 160E?

[Edit: Why do you think Freeview went with D1 instead of D3? Surely they must have known they would run out of room sooner or later! Maybe they're anticipating something we don't know about, or have some sort of agreement with Sky about making common channels FTA to save space (I notice the Sky TV One and TV 2 SD feeds are FTA, as is the Sky feed of Trackside).]

Optus D3 was launched on 21 August 2009, Freeview began transmissions on 02 May 2007. That would be why they went with D1 :-) I guess it helps to not need to move dishes as well
