Can the DMR-BW880 run as a network client? Does yours pickup other network share drives/
e.g. pull music/video/photos off another PC/server on the home network?

No. Can connect to the PC via network but limited types of files can be played.

Or is this not possible at all, and is why you have the Playon media player?

Yes. Plays almost anything.

The SONY 32EX720 I got as well can also connect to the Network and Internet but once again limited in files performance although it does have 3D. JB HiFi do a very good discount if pushed.

My pick would be...
The new Panasonic DMP-BDT110.
It does everything the current DMR-BW880 does plus 2D-3D conversion, Skype, a home screen you can customize, an iPhone app, a new GUI PLUS it can access your network storage!
As Sheldon from Big Bang would say... BAZINGA!

Looks to be a pretty cool device, would love to get my hands on it.

Not correct. Its only a player, not a recorder. Still looks like a "must have" unit though.

So it seems the next best thing is to get 2 units.

As units like the DMP-BDT110 don't have a freeview hd receiver/recorder.

Somaybe combionation of something like:

DMP-BDT110 + Freeview HD receiver/recorder
TViX NZ SlimS1 Duo (does everythign but DVD) + DVD player
DMR-BW880 + Network media player

You may find the New Panasonic Recorders recently released in Japan interesting.

Google Translate of http://panasonic.jp/diga/blu-ray/bzt800/.

Nice, unfortunately the long trip to NZ usually shrinks the HDD on Panasonic's recorders.

:(
