Nety: That video card is Purevideo V1 which means it is still handing off a ton of stuff to the CPU. Get yourself a low end current card and I think you will find your problems go away. A GF 210 is purevideo V4 so will be enough for HD TV.

CPU usage is not the issue here.
The channels that freeze are SD so not very intensive on the CPU
The channels that are HD DON'T freeze even though the CPU is running at near max.

Tried turning off Hardware acceleration.
tried different codecs.
Updated to very latest version of wintv 7 also.
No joy there.

Well I would still replace the video card. I have been through a few video cards over the years right back to when I had a 6600GT and my experience has been that getting a card with a later version of Purevideo resolves the kinds of issues that you are seeing.
Maybe see if you can borrow one? Then you could confirm one way or the other.

I upgraded from XP to win7 and used mediacenter for TV. (have found this to do what I wanted in so far as minimising to surf the web on ad breaks)
Problems all gone.
Makes me think it was a software issue not a hardware issue.
.

Feel free to buy me a new grapics card though.

sub: There is an issue that can occur with the ArcSoft video decoder (as used by WinTV), where channels can lockup if hardware acceleration is enabled, which might be what you're seeing. This effects multiple applications.

You could try disabling hardware acceleration, or try a different decoder, or wait for Hauppauge to get a fixed decoder from ArcSoft.

I tried this on my HVR2200 using WinTV 7 under Windows 7 and looks like it may have stopped the freezing and locking up.
At least it hasn't done so in the last few days since disabling.
