My main issue (lockups when recording back to back programs) is fixed.

Other good fixes I've noticed (these are all listed in the change log):
  • Can resume watching a recorded program from last position
  • Doesn't lose scheduled recordings when updating firmware
  • Don't need to enter password to delete recordings
So looks promising, if it's stable after this then I'm v. happy with the product, just a shame some of these were problems when released.

Hi, this is my first post to this forum. I purchased the DishTV S7090PVR some 3 weeks ago and have installed the new firmware updates (currently V 1.26). I still get lock-ups. My hunch is that is caused by the remote control. It seems to be so very sensitive eg. press button 1 and often you get 11. Last night I pressed the "lib" button which switched the TV display back & forth from library back to Tv & back to libray. At that point the PVR was locked up. The only way to recover was to power off & reboot.

What do others think of the supplied remote?

i got my mother a s7090 and only see it when i go out there to do the updates so don't really have any idea if the remote is causing the lock-ups. she gets the occasional one but it's getting less and less with the updates.

but i did ask dishtv about alternate remotes as the small channel and volume buttons are pretty bad, they said they will be getting better remotes and also the codes to use programmable remotes. they didn't give any time frame.

All harmony remotes have access to the same equipment database, and they can learn from a remote too if what's in the database doesn't work/isn't there etc.  So pick any and it will very probably work.

You'd have a far better chance of selecting a harmony remote with button shapes/sizes that suit your needs, than expecting the supplier to offer another type.

I've got the 785. Yes does all the buttons of the PVR, but so will any Logitech Harmony I think. More expensive models typically give you things like touch / colour screens and ability to control more devices.

I've also had remote lockup issues..press lib and it will flick back to TV.Only way to fix it appears to be to power off and on again..whether this is the remote or not , I'm unsure.

Not the most user friendly remote (particularly for people with bigger hands)

My other problems I was having that I mentioned on the other thread appear to have stopped (I replaced the loop cable and touch wood all is good)and like mentioned above the back to back freeze is now fixed on the latest firmware.

Apart from the hard-drive failure on the first box it (touch wood) is doing what I want it to do now, although it's a shame it was so buggy at release...

Hi I purchased the S7090pvr unit and am now on my second replacement since beggining of Jan 2012.

I seem to have picked the only two units in NZ that have the same fault, lucky me!.

There has got to be others out there who are having the same problems..

The Tech at Dish asked me to send details of what happens as he is blaming signal strength and quality for the fault:

Email to Dish Guy;
Hi Waldo,I am using a sat dish that was installed by SKY TV company.I am sure it is the same as everyone else in the country is using.I will say again that when we watch any channel at all we don't get any problems and the pictures - sound etc are great. How can recording a channel that is receiving great pictures and sound cause slipping etc when it is played back?

I have been recording lots of programs and what I have found discounts your signal and quality strength level being the problem. If i record a program that is breaking up because of signal strength and quality being low when I play it back it should always skid - skip or break up in the same section as you can't fix a bad recorded signal. If I rewind the same scene that slipped and play it again it plays ok over the section that it slipped at previously. That just can't happen if that section records bad due to signal strength. If it is recorded faulty - slipping - jittering due to signal quality etc it will always play the same. It can't just fix it'self if I rewind, It's not possible!!!!! I have also checked signal strength again on channels and I have 85% S and 84% Q and these prgrams still skip - jitter etc if recorded and played back. There is also something else that happens that is not in the book that came with the unit.I can be watching a recorded program and it will stop playing and the on screen display says recording has ended and the (booked recording) screen comes up on screen. At the bottom of the screen are a red and yellow square giving me the option to delete or select single recordings. If I try to bring up my recorded list to carry on watching my pre recorded program it does nothing. I have to switch off the power to the unit and switch on again before i can continue to watch the recorded program I was viewing.

Exact steps taken re slipping fault:I record a number of programs, some are sequential on the same channel say around 7.30pm to 9.30pm using the epg system. The next night I will be recording at around the same time but will decide to watch a prerecorded program from the night before.I will start to watch the program and fast forward at speed (5) to get to the beginning of the program and sometimes I go past the start and have to wind back a little at speed (5 or 4) and may even miss the beginning again and have to go forward again at speed (1 or 2) to get the exact start of the program.I start to watch and after about 30 seconds or so the picture will slip and the sound makes a skidding noise (picture goes pixelated), only for a split second but it causes you to miss out on what is being said. I then rewind just forward of the slip and play it again and the scene plays without a problem but it will then slip a little later on.This happens every time I use the search forward or back mode to miss out adds etc.If I dare to edit recorded programs to save it without adds the slipping is worse.
The units also locks up at times during playback and the picture sits on screen for around 30 seconds and then play ok again.
I am waiting for Dish TV to send some sort of fix.
The unit does all I want and is simple to use but these niggling faults are doing my head in and I can see me taking this unit back to the shop also.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

Hi Mike,

What resolution do you have the HDMI signal set to output? I have a S7090PVR and also a T1050PVR (the terrestrial version). I found that the T1050PVR isn't able to handle output at high resolution (1080) and produced similar symptoms to what you're seeing - drops sound / picture briefly, if you rewind then play the same section it will be fine. I've set mine to output native and let the TV handle upscaling which has worked much better. S7090 might be the same but that's off elsewhere at the moment so can't test it.

The fast forward / rewind is a little hit and miss as you're experiencing, but still much better than watching 4 mins of ads every 10 mins :-).

Don't really get many hangs these days - the original firmware was pretty buggy but recent releases seem to have addressed most of these problems.

Cheers.

Mate this sort of experience has been very typical of a lot of freeview devices.  It's sometimes genuinely signal related though all too often that's used as a fob off for larger underlying problems, usually software related.

It's this sort of thing I would have thought freeview would have been more interested in, given they have their approved logo slapped over the front of many of the units in question.  It's similar to the Android vs Apple situation, where one has set minimum hardware spec levels and the other lets anyone install their software on whatever hardware they want.

Good luck with your enquiries, and don't forget to send them the bill for your testing and commissioning efforts.

Hi Mike,

Are you sure? The manual says it is an option. I don't have my S7090PVR here to check. I assume you have got the latest firmware on it?

What choices do you have under the "HD Resolution" option?

Cheers.
