Many people have purchased non freeview approved STB, which do have teletext compatibility, so I pressume those may no work with a different teletext system. I have a hills freeview approved STB, and that has no teletext anyway.
sbiddle: Last I heard (around 18 months ago), the plan was for DigiText to launch as a replacement for Teletext after ASO. This would be a MHEG5 based replacement. I have no idea of this is still the plan.
But would that be compatible with existing STBs and freeview UHF TVs which do have textetxt already built in.
It has nothing to do with Teletext compatability, since it would be a MHEG5 based service that would work with every Freeview certified device.

My first job in journalism (well, sort of) was at Teletext, working in the captioning department putting out subtitles for Deaf and hard of hearing viewers... interestingly the service was widely used by ESOL students because New Zealanders' accent is too hard to understand unless you've also got the written version underneath.
Kiwis talk much faster than most other regions, I discovered, so a 30 minute episode of Shortland Street would often contain as many subtitles as an hour long Xena, for instance.
They do tend to forget about Teletext though. I remember being in the control room at TVNZ when the first digital content was being broadcast. I asked the techy guy I knew what it would do to the subtitles and he looked at me horrified. They hadn't tested for subtitles at all. Nobody knew.
