This could be a turning point for Freeview content - I see that CTV in Christchurch has now gone widescreen & confirmed it's intention to move on to Freeview later this year (date TBC).

Just as a side-topic, after watching Media7 last night (a discussion on Public Broadcasting), maybe the biggest hurdle for Freeview is the fees to be on that platform.

From what I understand, a Free To Air broadcaster has basically 2 options - pay Freeview to carry it's programming, or try & set-up a digital broadcast system - out of their own pocket.

Maybe the Freeview fee is set too high for existing local stations to transition & new channels to start up (whether it be new networks or local start-ups).. If a private trust was established to run a public-service type channel ala Stratos, would they be able to cover that cost? The experience of Stratos would suggest no - so why not change the fee structure??

Perhaps people have to get out of the mindset that a public service channel necessarily has to be owned and/or operated by the Government?

Media 7 might be a little biased in their reporting. It is a show made by Top Shelf. Choice TV is their channel and Media 7 will likely screen there once tvnz kill tvnz7. What's the betting that we see that channel become tv1+1 now that they've turned away from the home shopping channel idea?

Don't jump to conclusions yet, because the article does say that they are in negotiations with another provider and since there are only two that would be JDA.

On the Media 7 show I saw, I don't think they mentioned ChoiceTV, or any other operator outside Stratos, Maori TV & TVNZ7 (3 different variations on the concept of public broadcasting). The opinions were for the most part very pro-Public Service TV.

The guys behind Media 7 may well have known what was in the wings (being a production of the same company it's quite likely), so maybe the TIMING of a show ostensibly about public broadcasting was no fluke?

If Choice TV can deliver a commercial model with quality programming it might just challenge some people's preconceptions of what commercially viable TV is. :)

The battle over having a public broadcasting service is a part of the wider debate over what sort of content Freeview should have, if Freeview is really living up to it's potential, and what that potential actually is.

this sounds like good news but first thing they need to do is fix freeview HD (dvb-t) SD channels aspect ratio as it is not 16:9 its more like 720x576 --> 1047x576 (16:11) when it should be 720x576 --> 1024x576 (16:9)

once they fix this it will be good

Apparently in the latest TV Guide it says that Choice TV launches on 28 April. Hmm.. Shouldn't there be some test transmissions soon...? (not to mention details of their lineup and a website.)

Unlikely. The rights to air that would be positively stratospheric. More so even than Rugby World Cup.

Just saw a post on ChoiceTV Facebook page - confirming the channel will launch on April 28 (as previously announced)

However it also says that the programme schedule will be released on MONDAY. :)

Soon we'll see what shows it will feature, and we surely can't be too far off seeing a test signal - nothing being picked up by my Samsung set, but it doesn't see any hidden channels - has anyone with better equipment seen any signs of tests?

(as an aside - is there a way of changing this thread's title to "ChoiceTV thread" or something similar? That might fit the discussion better now..)
