rugrat: All the movies in hd on tv2 are only 2 channel sound that i've watched, on tv3 they're the great 5.1 sound, i've given up on tvnz for movies, they seem to be useless.

It was quite nice having Diehard 4.0 and Avatar recently in HD 5.1.  I guess my only complaint about TV3's HD is, they don't have a HD logo running. While I am not a fan of the channel logos that appear, if you're going to have a logo anyway (and TV3's is pretty large really) just a little HD against it would be nice.

+1 an HD logo is a lingering deficiency with TV3.

Don't tell me you really want an HD logo on all the time. Surely you can find it's HD from the epg. Why do you need to know it's HD anyway? Can't your golden eyes tell you that? You are all mad to want an HD logo on anything. Are you all afraid that you can't tell the difference without a logo? Gees.

Wouldn't it be better to try to stop tvnz from putting up an HD logo? HD news would obviously be a bigger exercise than just painting the set!

The logo is unobtrusive given they have a channel logo already.

As for HD news, agree entirely. The entire workflow has to be HD and even then much of the content they show, either sourced from overseas agencies and from their ENG teams will be in SD. I can't imagine in this financially constrained time they would be wanting to spend money on all their remote trucks/vans to upgrade them to HD or upgrade the presenters to HD ready ones :-)

A TV3 insider told me that the business case isn't there for news in HD.  For this reason, the weather graphics are still just SD, although I notice that they still look crisper on the HD channels, because of the compression that happens on the FreeView channels.

While we are on the subject, since the Hobson St news room got a paint over someone forgot to paint the mounting bolts for the blue screen, they stand out like dogs balls on the weather map, anyway back on topic.

They're still showing the odd show in 4:3, never mind HD.

lchiu7: I am guessing it's cost but it's interesting to see both TV3 and TVNZ have a mish mash of HD programming of the US shows they air when clearly they all originate in HD.

I suspect it could be cost, or perhaps the provider has elected not to provide a HDi 50Hz version of their programming?

I didn't do a lot of data collection but examples include

TVNZ - Once Upon a Time - 16:9 but SD, American Idol ditto (but could be because they don't want to send the HD version over the satellite), Desperate Housewives(!) - SD and that is a surprise given presumably how popular the show is and the vibrant colour palette it's shot in

TV3 - House 16:9 SD, could be others.

Is your TV broken ?

Once Upon A Time and Desperate Housewives are both in HD.

House is SD because of contracts

philip February 15, 2012 at 9:06 pmTV3′s problem re House lies in its contract with NBC-Universal, which distributes the show. Under the terms, anything NBC-Universal supplied in SD before the deal was last renewed two years ago will continue to be delivered in SD. Only shows bought under the agreement since the renewal will be delivered in HD. So ongoing series like House and Law & Order will remain in SD; ironically, most of the new HD shows that could have aired in HD on 3 have been relegated to SD sister channel, Four.

No I was writing from memory since I don't watch either show. But Revenge is in SD on TV2 and that's a new show so there should be no contractual issues.

correct me if I am wrong but aren't there different feeds for the SD and HD content or is that only because there are still analogue broadcasts?

I watch some TV on TCL and if a show is in HD on TV2 say, I don't get it in HD since I don't have a T-Box but neither is there a HD logo on it but there is when I watch the Freeview version.

Of course once the digital switchover has occurred there might only be one feed. Then they can do what the US used to do and put up at the beginning, in HD 5.1 where available.

Is that what is causing that? - first time I saw it I thought I suddenly had dead pixels - but fortunately it started moving around and I realised it was a TVNZ issue. Of course now I have noticed it I see it EVERY time and it annoys me a lot!

Pretty sure it is in HD. Check your EPG.
