I was thinking maybe a card like this would work great, the specs seem pretty good and it has a HDMI out which is what i want and the reason I went M/B based video chipset in the first place as I have to drive 2 displays

Fossie: I made those samples when I was having a few problems with my system. I'll make some new longer ones.

As for video cards, i'm using an 8600mgt. Having just installed vista last night, I haven't yet tried Hardware acceleration. (my hvr is still having a few problems, and works occasionally).

exDee, I get the feeling that your system will stutter with fast movements and action scenes etc. Does the batman 720p recording work well for you? It's actual 720p and not upscaled.

It seems to play the Batman sample fine.

Heres a shot of CPU usage, its fairly high but doesnt max out at 100%, just in the 90's.
Thats from playing it in Media Player Classic with the latest PowerDVD Ultra codec selected, no audio.

Thats pretty high, and with real tv, your system will be doing a bit more. In comparison, mine runs at 35% when getting live TV2 with AC3 audio.

I've discovered the VMR9 fps counts, so i'll run some tests for each video.

Here they are, dont know if they help or not:
Batman: FPS: 47.3, 9ms jitter
Rugby: FPS 45.67, 0ms jitter
Neighbours: FPS 43.29, 1ms jitter
Home Improvement: FPS 16.68, 21ms jitter
Indiana Jones: FPS 23.35, 30ms jitter

All using VMR9 (renderless) in MPC using PowerDVD codec.

I've thrown something together for you here, I will have another look at what I've actually written soon lol. Also need to clarify front page and added EPG information.

Hopefully it can help some people! Would be interested to see if you and mcraenz have anything to add :)

edit: need to add XMLTV information and S3 suspend/wake information for recordings/EPG updates

Well I went out and brought a 8500GT today so hopefully I can get smooth viewing in DVBViewer on my media center machine, allthough the first promblem is sorting out the reds on my 42" plasma as they are bleeding all over the place useing the 8500gt compared to using the onbard ATI 1250 video, anyone else seen this promblem before ??

Just one other thing for people to remember - if you are using Vista you *must* use EVR if you want hardware acceleration.

EVR supports DXVA2 and PowerDVD also supports DXVA2.

DXVA was the original hardware acceleration under XP using VMR9 however while Vista supports DXVA it will not deliver hardware acceleration. If you're running Vista and use VMR9 your system will not be able to take full advantage of the hardware offloading.

Was waondering why my CPU was running around 20% on each core when i have a 8800GT.

will change it back to EVR and see if it fixes it.

Nice starter guide cranz. It may be worth adding something in about configuring SQL for network MPclient access though.

Well i have just about given up, installed the 8500GT and its working fine in both Vista & MCE 2005 (Duel boot on seprate drives)

Set up PowerDVD and set it to use nVidia PureVideo (ticked)
Installed DVDViewier and working fine with all the DVB-T channels found
Setup the options as per Fossie instructions, scanned and found 17 services here in CHCH, picked TV1 to watch and well well it was working fine with no lag and sound with the AC3 feed. Did the same with GBPVR and it worked great as well.

DId the same in Vista but it didnt work I had lag, so back to MCE2005 as that was working, but bugger me now it wont work and get lag like on Vista and its just turned to crap, CPU is useing between 11-17% its just like its not useing the GT8500 to do all the work im at a loss now as to what to do.

Its also starting to add up in costs and the set top box option is looking cheaper if I sell the current hardwear I have purchased to set this up.

Any ideas guys.

Hm I'm not sure whats going on, Your Nvidia drivers are the newest? Is your PowerDVD up to date?

In DVBViewer in options, and under DirectX I think you can change the renderer to Vista Enchanced (Unfortunetly I dont have DVBViewer running and have lost my key.. so can't check) have you tried this when under Vista?

Thanks for the XML file but...

dvbviewer scans and finds all channels. MediaPortal TV Server scans and finds only TV3 and C4. Both Signal Level and Signal Quality are at 100% and I have direct line of sight of Mt Kaukau in Wellington (about 2 kms away) from this window.

Any ideas?

Hmm the xml file is loaded with 690, 706 and 778 for the Kaukau and Wharite sites in Wellington so you should be alright. It doesn't contain tuning paramters for Baxters Knob, Fizherbert or Wellington infill.

Is DVBViewer picking up TVNZ and Kordia on 690Mhz and 778Mhz? (Channel editor should tell you)

If so will need to investigate further
