Old Grey Geek: I must have read this thread a dozen times and still I am a bit puzzled, here are my questions, I'll try to keep it simple so as I can understand it.
Ok
I have been looking at the WinTV-HVR-3000
Now , this card supports DVB-s DVB-T and analogue TV (which sound just the ticket) but no mention of MHEG-5 or H264 it is also MPG-2 and not MPG-4
So will this work for our DVB-T? or must it be MPG-4? or will my Graphics card (Nvidia GeForce FX 5200) do that job?
Also will this HVR 3000 do the EPG? as there is no mention of MHEG 5.
My system is: AMD athalon3000+ running at 2.1 Ghz, 1.5 Gig Ram on a Gigabyte K8 Triton GA-k8ns Pro Motherboard. Out-putting to a Panasonic TX-26LX500A

If this card is not suitable what should I be looking at?

Ok ill help you out here as best i can

The WinTV HVR3000 will work fine for DVB-T and DVB-S and also Analogue but you have to remember this is a hybrid tuner and you will not be able to use all 3 at the same time. Also the PVR3000 only recieves the signal it doesnt decode it so thats why there is no mention of H.264 on the product box

Your GForce FX5200 is not going to cut it as it doesnt do H.264 you are at least going to need a GT8500 or better (or simlar ATI card that does H.264)

Also your M/B is AGP so you really are going to have to upgrade I belive to get a video card that does H.264 unless you can find a AGP one.

Im not sure about the MHEG 5 EPG

As for the rest of your system as said above it all hinges on you getting the H.264 decodeing done which means a new card to see if the rest of your system can handle it.

Hmmmm. Pity about that h.264
Well I suppose I could put up with DVB-S.
With a Hauppauge WinTV Nova S+ PCI DVB-S
Or will I have problems there as well?

tonyhughes: I moot the creation of a DTT/DVB(x) forum category, and closing this thread. Its a monster, with lots of valuable info, but too many pages, it becomes unusable for someone wanting to quickly solve a small issue.

Fossie: I think we should have dvb-s and dvb-t forums. It will make it much easier to answer peoples questions, and for them to get the information.

I think we should have a "Digital TV" forum on the front page of listing, with DTT and DTH sub-forums. I think "Home Theater" has outlived its useful life, and probably should remain reserved for pure HT discussion (i.e. not DVB or HTPC discussion). My 2c.

I think Home Theatre should be renamed Audio/Visual or similar, with a DVB/Freeview subforum to include DVBT and DVBS. Any home theatre stuff goes in the main AV section, eg reciever advice.

Just one tiny question.
MHEG-5?
Will this card give me EPG or do i have to go out and buy a TV guide?
But then again there is the freeview guide on t' net and I could use WinTV-Scheduler that comes in the box. This could be almost perfectish but what more can a poor boy do?

DVB-S transmits the EPG via EIT which can be extracted by any half decent PVR software. No need to go anywhere near MHEG-5, it's a DVB-T issue.

Well. As luck would have it the shop was open and I got my Nova S.
Now to connect it all up. First problem. Do I need a splitter on the cable from the LNB to connect my sky box and the card or can I just do a "Y" connection on the cable? Will my sky box chuck out spurious voltages and blow up my comp? Will the card suck all the signal and degrade my Sky siglal? Should I open a beer? What shall I have for tea Have I fed the dog?
All these questions and more. Where is my dog. did she leave home because I fogot to feed her?

Ok, got my dvbviewer working by unregistering and re-registering the filters. Phew.

Now is it just my imagination playing tricks, or is the upscaled content really a lot sharper and more detailed? (I am comparing it to a Sky feed mind you...)

Also, I remember someone mentioning that one of the channels is playing a hi def test. Where can I find this channel?

Yes you need a splitter, a Y i dont think works.
No the sky box won't blow up your comp, it probably just wont work.
No i dont think it'll do any sucking, apart from the sky picture quality which already sucks.
Yes, open a beer.

Yes Freeview upscaled DTT or even DVB-S is noticably better than most sky channels.

Well the dog came back and got fed, I cooked a fish tea with peas and potatoes. As I think you'r right about the splitter and I don't have one handy I opened the beer.

For anyone that's interested.

After playing a lot with GB-PVR, I gave up on that (too many things didn't work with DVB-T) I tried Media Portal. I can now get all channels working with pretty much perfect quality (ie not choppy). My CPU usage isn't too high either, even with TV3.

OS: Windows XP
CPU: Intel Quad Core Q6600
Video Card: Nvidia 7300GS - surprisingly this seems to handle OK, but I'm not using hardware acceleration though.

I'm using the nightly builds of Media Portal from a couple of days ago.

In terms of video filter, most seemed to work OK. At the moment, I have it set on ffdshow raw video filter
