Looking at Dick Smith website this morning I see they've dropped $200 off the cost of the DSE-620 Digital Terrestrial set top box. Now listed at $399 and available from 03/04/08

Guess they moved so many of them than they can drop their price due to hi volume of sales..

I think this is a pretty good indication that STB price is unlikely to be a problem for adoption of Freeview HD. In my book $599 was too much. $399 seems pretty reasonable to me for a HD capable STB.

At $399 before the service even starts, I'm sure it wont take long before set top boxes are available in the $200-$300 range.

Yes now. 17 Channels detected and working with Media Center PC hooked to 37" 1080p LCD and laptop using DVB Viewer.

Have even recorded Dirty Sexy money for the wife a couple of times. 2.7GB for the hour..ouch.

Actually we have been using Media Center PC and DVBViewer for day to day TV watching for about a month if not longer.

Hi,
last week i made enquiries to Avermedia in regardto their E506r hybrid dvb-t tuner
and the issue of being able to see the video on channels but no audio, their reply is:

"Thank you for choosing AVerMedia.If the audio streams in the DVB-T broadcast in New Zealand AAC or AC3, then our current application version, 6.0.11, won't be able to hear any audio. However, we have our engineers are currently working to solve this issue. According to our engineers, this issue should be solved in our next software release, AVerTV 6.0.12. "

have tried dvbviewer and the powerdvd codecs and get audio/video ok, bit of a pain the dvbviewer seems to time out after 20 mins or so.

is there an alternative freeware program that will work as well?

Ok. Here we go.
I got the Nova-s, I think I already said that but what the Hey.
After the usual Windoze hardware installation probs.(you need some files from SP2 Disk etc.) I got the hardware installed and went on to installing software. The supplied WIN TV software installed ok and then I got onto scanning channels. After several attempts I got all the freeview channels and heaps of Sky channels but I got it working ok but with no EPG. In my opinion this prog has a clumsy interface and seems to be designed for viewing on a PC, I wanted somthing better so I downloaded Media Portal.

Now this little app is a bit more complex to set up but it is quite intuitive. To get the thing to find the channels I used this handy guide http://www.geekzone.co.nz/Regs/3769 I have one suggestion if you have problems finding channels with these settings for the freeview.
These are Regs settings for the .tpi file

satname=Freeview on Optus D1 (160E)
12456,H,22500
12483,H,22500

These are mine

satname=All channel on Optus D1 (160E)
12322,H,22500
12734,H,22500

I used mine for LNB 1 and his for LNB 2 set up with 10750 for both LNB0 and LNB1 in the Ku-band setup with a 0 switch.

This setup also gave me the EPG which works well.
The othee advantage this app has over WinTV is you can use the GUI to play all media on your Hard Drives. I used the option for external player for videos and selected Media Player Classic as my player of choice, your's may differ but I found this to work well also.

One other great feature was "Delete Encrypted Channels" that really tidied up the channels interface.

All in all a great deal of fun and only took about 4 hours.

Problems. Just the remote at the moment (6mtr cable sucks the life out of the sensor. the comp is in another room connected by s-video) I will look at that later but for now the wireless mouse runs it all from the coffee table and I use that to read the morning news on the net anyway. The dog's asleep in the other room waiting for a WALK but I am going to open a beer, watch TV and finnish the Pizza we had for dnner last night.

For those of you who are able to view and record the DVB-T broadcasts, can you provide information on which audio codecs are being used? I know AAC LATM is causing problems for some but I have read AC3 is also being used by TV3. If that is the case then that would be great since they are broadcasting the bulk of HD stuff this year and I have no special interest in the Olympics that TVNZ will be broadcasting, apparently in HD

Costly? About US$99 for the software. The alternative is bying a NZ$400 set top box.
