hdinsider: Australia Network is easily picked up on Intelsat5 in NZ. Unfortunately it's 4:3 so I don't watch it much. SBS Tasmania was only on the NANZ beam because of a lack of capacity on the NA and NB Australian beams. Choice TV has some of the programs they showed. Will miss the Tour de France...

I understand you need a 90cm dish to receive from Intelsat 5 (and C band LNB).
Not sure I want to put a NNW facing 90cm dish on my roof in Wellington!

mthredgo: Silverlake,

They mightn't make a big deal about it, but you can definitely get Australia Network. I get it on Intelsat 5 with a 1.2m petal dish on my roof. It also gives me BBC News. No EPG, but clear signals, and good audio. Last night there was a new one too NRLtville (on both Intelsat 5 and again on Intelsat 8) showing a Cowboys game. It had good audio, but I couldn't get the video properly. It was all blocky, like it was a weak signal, except it wasn't a weak signal. Anyone know why I couldn't decode the video? I don't have MPEG-4 on my receiver, but normally the video is black for MPEG-4 channels and I still get the audio for them.

Oh and there's plenty of people on GeekZone saying they get it on a 90cm dish.

VAST wasn't meant to be part of the digital switchover for Tassie until "1st half 2013". So this does seem premature. Their website says "For complaints or enquiries regarding SBS transmission and reception please ring 1800 500 727 during business hours." - I suggest one of us, not every New Zealander rings that number, and tells GeekZone what's going on, except it's a 1800 number, so I think we need someone in Australia to ring them on our behalf and find what's out going on. Any GeekZoners currently in Oz able to do so for us Monday morning?

Fingers crossed SBS is back by tonight.

And just for interests sake last night the atmosphere was so clear I could get better signals on my Asiasat3 dish than I've ever seen before. (I could also see Mount Taranaki from Mangaone, just east of Shannon too, so that means the air was pretty clear) I got to see Phoenix InfoNews, Xing Kong and Channel V at times with no artifacts which I've never been able to see at all before. See http://extra-channels.com/2012/04/25/asiasat-3s-with-a-too-small-dish/

I can call Ozzie 1800 numbers from Skype, so I'll give that a go on Monday if SBS still absent and no news on here.

I would like to get Australia Network and BBC World, but I really don't want a big satellite dish. I feel that we're being let down by the NZ Authorities. These channels should be available via the Freeview platform - they're showing Chinese overseas channels!

The NZ Minister for Broadcasting seems happy to fall into line with what suits Sky TV. I enjoyed the comments during the week from the British Parliaments "Culture Media and Sport Committee" report into the business practices of News International when they said “We conclude, therefore, that Rupert Murdoch is not a fit person to exercise the stewardship of a major international company.”, and committee member Tom Watson went on to say; "These people corrupted our country. They brought shame on our police force and our Parliament. They lied, they cheated, blackmailed and bullied and we should all be ashamed when we think how we cowered before them for too long".

Thanks Silverlake for offering to do the call.

I don't think 90cm is big. 1.2m isn't big.

Saying that I bought my 2.3m mesh dish 2nd hand on trade me, and it looked small in the photos, and then when I saw it at the guys house, I did swear just a little, little bit and it just fit in the trailer I hired.

Still if I was doing it again I'd get a 3.6m dish, or maybe 4.

xarqi: Anyone know about the VAST system in Oz? I don't know much, but is it possible that SBS is now only using this to provide satellite coverage?

I believe the VAST beam cannot be accessed in NZ.

Yup - I figured that.  I wasn't hoping it would be an alternative for me/us, but that it could explain why SBS has gone from Optus D1 without any warning to or complaint from Tasmanians on the net - maybe they are all (or the vast majority (groan)) getting it via VAST now anyway.

I have a 90 cm dish and planned on repointing it to IS5 with a C band LNB and offsetting my Ku LNB for continued D1 reception at some time, but it would mean I'd need an expensive independently powered multiswitch inside somewhere, rather than the cheap passive one I have outside.  At the time I installed the system, I didn't deem it to be worth the cost, but with the meteoric slide in NZ FTA quality in the last year or so, and now the seeming loss of the only decent FTA programming from D1, I may revisit the idea.

Yeah vast signals are technically receivable here in NZ, (think min 2.4m solid dish +), but that system is quite locked down, unlike freeview NZ. From mammary the decoders need to be activated sort of thing, so you really do need to be there, or have someone able to register a decoder for you etc. I don't believe just anyone could get the satellite decoder either, as you had to prove you couldn't get the terrestrial signal first.

I had a pretty good look back in the day, looking for F1 coverage....

Will be sad to see the loss of non freeview channels on D1/C1 receivable by standard decoders/hardware etc.

So SBS is off the air to nz'ers today..  Since TVNZ is rubbish and TV3 is not any better I give you some light .. SBS have a On Demand service so you can go watch Coast there.

You will probably have to use and Australian Free Proxy service as I think SBS blocks users from outside Ozzy.

Look at below sites for free proxies
http://www.proxynova.com/proxy-server-list/country-au/
http://aliveproxy.com/proxy-list/proxies.aspx/Australia-au

Seem to work.. a little slow tho.

Given that you would still have just 1 fixed dish with 1 x C band and 1 x Ku band LNB's, would you really need an independently powered multiswitch?
(I was thinking that I may end up with a similar configuration and was hoping that my existing diseqc switch powered from the STB would be OK)

Rockwiz is available via SBS website without the need for proxy (not sure about Coast).

Maybe TV is too rotten in New Zealand and it's time to move to Oz. Aussie Freeview kicks butt over NZ Freeview.

Exhibit A: http://freeview.com.au/tvguide/default.aspx?regionId=88

Australia  - 6 public broadcasters - ABC 1,2 and 3, ABC News 24 and SBS HD and SBS2.
New Zealand from July 1 - none

We could all get together and build an Ark

The issue is that I want to supply independent dual feeds to two locations in the house.  Now I have a 2-in, 4-out multiswitch, but to add another input for C band means I have to go to a 3-in, n-out one.  Mind you, if there is now nothing on V-pol, maybe I can rejig what I have.  Something to think on.
Sorry for the thread diversion.

The main reason that I put a Sat STB in my bedroom was to get SBS. Guess it's back to sex..

With the Month of May being chock a block with "Live European Soccer Finals" it would not surprise me if it
isn't just a case of Murdochism. Tomorrow morning FA Cup "Live" ... has been Murdoched!
Of course this is just another of my theories, but Big M likes the monopoly on his star attraction which is
Live Sport. I smell a plot!!!

This is my first post, so I hope I do it right.

I'm also dissapointed if we wouldn't get SBS back here in Wellington. I hardly watch any of the other Freeview channels. SBS had a good choice of programs. I liked to watch the International Movies. There are other countries who make good movies. It doesn't always have to be in English.
I was also looking forward to the Eurovision Song Contest in 3 weeks. Since Stratos doesn't exsist anymore - who brought us the show in the last years - I don't think there will be any change to watch it this year apart from the Internet. BVN on D2 would bring it. But there is not much of interest on this satelit for us. To install another LNB just for 3 shows a year would be silly. My son liked to watch the 'Letters and numbers'. What do we have here which is similar? Nothing. There are so many boring reality shows, cooking shows and whatever.

I hope there will be a way to get SBS back in the near future. It's more entertaining than any channel here in NZ.
