hydroksyde:I'd put in an STB and add a logitech harmony remote, then you one remote with a nice "Watch TV" button that will power on the TV and STB, set the input on the TV (assuming it doesn't go out of sync somehow), and then the volume buttons on the remote will control the TV, and the channel buttons will control the STB.

That "assuming it doesn't go out of sync somehow" is the huge flaw in this plan. Cue tech support calls in 3....2.....1....

"My tv is on but the box with the numbers is not showing anything" and "If I press the button the TV goes off and the box with the numbers comes on"...

There will always be additional complexity and points of failure with a two box (screen + STB) model.

You'll just have to take their old TV remote away, and tell them not to touch the buttons on the TV or the world will end...

sbiddle: You can easily spot is this is the case or not by looking for dotcrawl - since a modulator will in 99% of cases simply have a composite input.

Here's an install I saw today, while on a job looking at a guest internet captive portal... On the left are the old analog modulators, with the three analog receivers removed, and the composite sky modulators still in place... On the right looks to be a newly installed bank of DVB-S receivers, with (presumably) analog RF out. Even seems to contain its own launch amplifier, since it bypasses the main one fed from the sky modulators.

There's a guy on the roof at work right now, installing a UHF aerial (we currently have an analogue TV in the staff room). Sure, we have two months to go, but it's still pretty close to "last minute" considering how much notice there's been!

Friend has had family members from down south call him because their TV has stopped working. He was a lot more polite than I would have been...
