I like the Pannys.

The big advantages they have over the MySky and most other Freeview STB's are AV inputs and a DLNA server.

This means that you can record from external sources. It also means you can watch what you recorded in one room in another room (over the network).

The other thing that is handy is that you can burn recordings temporarily or permanently to optical disks. This is useful if you want to keep them, just as an overflow to free up hard drive space, or someone wants to see a show you have recorded.

Beware however, and check the model number carefully before buying. The DMR-BWT models let you burn material to disk. The DMR-PWT models are gimped by comparison and only let you play disks (they are sold as recorders, but only record to the hard drive, when it's full you have to start deleting). I'm not sure whether or not the HTW series let you transfer recordings to optical disk.

In my most humble of opinions, an old TiVo is better than almost anything out there at the moment. It is certainly better than the Freeview built in to my Samsung UA50JU6400SXNZ.

Our TiVo was MIA for a while there when I ran an initial setup while the service was down. We were forced to use the Samsung built in Freeview and plug in a USB stick to record. What a nightmare!

TiVo does HD, has dual tuners, series link, etc.... and you could probably pick one up for cheap.

Not all the Panny models have A/V inputs. I think only the BWT models. The PWT models are pretty useless in comparison.

On the other hand it's very easy to transfer recordings from a Panny to a PC or Laptop via the network connection for editing and/or storage.

Bought the Panasonic DMR-HWT260GN today and I'm pretty happy with it so far (but it's early days). This and my Roku should cover all my bases now.

Just a note for anyone who's reading this thread and thinking of buying this model. As mentioned in this great review, Freeview Plus pops out an annoying menu at random times and the only way to get rid of it is to disable it completely. Unfortunately, you can't go and turn it back on if something is recording as I just found out.
