McNair indicates circa 9% of Maori tune into Maori TV daily that alone equates to greater 1.5 Million viewers per month. Add in non Maori viewers the the figure of 1.8 Million per month is achieved. So it is not a preposterous claim made by Maori TV.
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
Wiggum:
Even most of freeview these days is in HD.
This is factually incorrect (at least in Wellington). We have 25 FTA channels, and only three of them (TVNZ 1, TVNZ 2 and Three) broadcast in HD (Four when Māori TV switch). In Australia, only six of the 20+ channels are in HD.
Wiggum:
Yea, but where do you draw the line.
With 4K already available, 720p/1080p is fast becoming the new SD. Sky should move with the times and start offering 4K, charging people extra for that is acceptable. Don't charge extra for standard HD. Thats just an insult. Even most of freeview these days is in HD.
1080i - most noticable in the lines on sports fields and news readers glasses artifacing like crazy. IMO anything interlaced should go away, same for the arbitary frame rate conversion to 25 they do for movies.

Link to that claim please?

Bravo is also HD. So we already have 5, 6 when Maori switch.
Actually meant the watchable tv channels. There are a lot of junk channels on freeview too. Ie Chinese TV, shopping channels, dare I say Maori TV channel etc ....... Dont really care about those being HD or not.
NZ on air has the surveys if you care to look. Incidentally they also estimate that 50% of Māori TV’s daily audience is Māori viewers
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Well now that makes even less sense to me. I call BS on your claim.
If you making claims it will be good to at least try and back them up.
In 2015, 15 percent of New Zealand's population identified themselves as Maori. (Stats NZ)
New Zealand population is 4.596 million (Stats NZ). Therefore 15% is 689 400 Maori people in NZ. It does not make sense that there can possibly be 1.5 Million viewers per month if 50% of them are Maori.
Go get some real stats to backup your preposterous claims.
richms:
Clear that someone here doesnt understand views per month.
views per month, or viewers per month? Yes 2 different things and we talking about viewers per month. If i watch 50 shows on Maori TV in a month, am I not one viewer? Or are we adopting the youtube philosophy now for TV too?
MikeB4:
Maori TV averages 1.8 Million viewers per month – increasing at a rate of 14% every year since the stations launch.
Wiggum:
Good to hear, Maori TV gets roughly $33 million a year from taxpayers. I'm please to hear that someone actually watches it.
Saying that, I would much rather see that $33 million a year spent on other things. Bringing the AB games onto freeview would be a good start, and a far better use of that money.
If New Zealand wants rugby on Free-to-air, then it should vote with its wallet and stop paying to watch it on Sky - Rugby is only economical for Sky to have because people are dopey enough to pay for the privilege of being held for ransom.
If no one pays to watch rugby on Sky, then it will go back to FTA because it won't be economical for Sky to outbid FTA for the rights.
$33 million to televise someone else's pass time doesn't sound like sensible use of money to me. If we've taking votes on splurging $33 million to televise pastimes, I'd prefer the V8's thanks. Besides, as I understand it (and I'm happy to be corrected), the funding for Maori TV isn't strictly taxpayers money - it is funded from the income from Maori land etc, where the custody/management has fallen to the government for one reason or the other. So it is a way of distributing Maori money for the benefit of Maori.
I find Maori TV the channel for documentaries, a bit like the good-old-school Prime before SKY took it over.

This took about 30 seconds http://www.nzonair.govt.nz/document-library/2014-audience-research-full-report/
Believe what you will but the claim of 1.8 million per month is valid. Oh and it is not my claim it is the findings of a company that has been doing media surveys for a very long time

I guess you missed this part from the report you attached:
For instance, while 50% of Māori TV’s audience are Māori viewers, just 9% of Māori tune in each day. The best place to find
Māori viewers is via TV ONE (53% daily reach among Māori), TV3 (41%), and TV2 (39%).
And this part:

All you have done is supply proof that your preposterous claim is invalid

Wiggum:
Maori TV in HD. Seriously what is the point? Do people actually watch this channel?
Yes people do watch it and it is actually a very good channel, way better than any of the media works efforts. It is excellent that it will be HD.
It's the only network who consistently put their hand up to broadcast Russell Brown's Media Take (formerly Media7 from TVNZ 7 days).
whats 9% of circa 450,000? , answer circa 40,000 multiply by say 30 equals 1.2 Million. Now given that McNair say that only 50% of Maori TV viewers are Maori the 1.8million per month is conservative. But I am sure this won't meet your views even though its all in the documents I linked to.
