Trying to do the TV1 sample now. Its going incredibly slow on my 8500GT. (5fps)

edit: TV1 didnt work. Program froze at 87%.
Encoded the 5s neighbours sample instead. No audio and it runs at twice the normal speed.

I had a bit of luck with this process.

Show - New Tricks on TV1 (upscaled 720p content with AC audio)

created a simple avisynth with the following contents

DirectShowSource("c:\x264\New Tricks 2_20080927225800.ts")
converttoyv12()
ChangeFPS(25)
# changed framerate since the file seemed to have a framerate of 50fps and when I didn't do this the resulting video played at 1/2 speed

ran x264.exe with the following parameters

start /belownormal /b /w x264.exe  --threads 0 --bitrate 4000 --level 4.0  --bframes 1 --b-rdo  --weightb  --subme 5 --trellis 1 --analyse p8x8,b8x8,i4x4,p4x4  --me dia --thread-input --progress --no-psnr --no-ssim --output newtricks.264 newtricks.avs

After about 3 hours (for 60 minute show) created a H.264 video file of about 1.8G in size compared with the original 3.8Gb. Not much quality difference. This is on a modest dual core Athlon 64 3500.

Demuxed the AAC audio, converted to wav and then to AC3 and muxed the video and audio back into a MKV container. A bit tedious all of this but it works and the resultant file not only plays on any PC without having to have AAC-HE codec loaded, but the PQ isn't much different from the original broadcast.

Just to cross-reference that the following thread allows Handbrake to now transcode FreeviewHD *.ts files.
