Sky dont brand their sports channels with the number they are on, tv3 should rebrand to mediaworks 1 (and 2 for what was C4) if they cant think of anything better, since they are their first 2 channels.

Yeah... should have called TV3 "Channel 5.1" instead... Maybe my remote should have names instead of numbers.

To me the name TV3 sounds too much like a TVNZ channel. They should have changed the name to something like C3 years ago..

What the hell? The general public does not care about who owns MediaWorks... Surely they should call it Ironbridge 1 by the same logic... or Susan Turner 1. Heck, naming it after the CEO is the most logical of all moves don't you think!

Viewers don't 'care' about what MW's 'first 2 channels' are. They care about where they find them on their TV. And for a large proportion of the general public (free to air - not on another companies pay service) - it's where they show up when they first tune their TV's into Freeview.
Heck, Prime (Sky) has actually paid big money to get #10 on the Freeview service - position on the dial is EVERYTHING for these companies. And it's something they spend a lot of their money basing their broadcasting brands around. I agree, internet branding is a different thing all together, but why not leverage your existing (very strong) brand in order to promote your on-line service.

Recently TVNZ was talking about rebranding TV1 and TV2 to TVNZ 1 and TVNZ 2 in keeping with their corporate image as they do with TVNZ 6 & 7. Guess they want to looks like BBC TV that brands along the same line. By using your logic the public won't care.. US and Ozz networks just use their network name as a channel brand and usually only have one channel in a region..

Regarding C4 and HD:
The idea that they wouldn't go HD is *maddening* for me. Mediaworks seem to have shifted all my favourite shows (24, Heroes, Dollhouse etc.) over to C4. I know these shows were/are available in HD in the states. If they're going to be shifting shows like that over then in my opinion they *have* to go HD. I actually quite like having 3 plus 1 available, however I would exchange either 3 plus 1 or C42 for having C4 in HD any day.

Well, I don't see anything wrong with the +1 channels. Sometimes you will flick over, catch the end of something and can then see the whole thing.

We had Free Sat in the UK last year and got 30-40 odd channels, although not sure if it was in Hi-Def...we had a second hand CRT TV so didn't notice it. Not bad for free though (and the receiver came with the flat).

Do they have to necessarily sacrifice C42 and TV3+1 to have TV3 and FOUR in HD?

The TVNZ mux manages to have 2 HD and 2 SD stations on it, could it be done by Mediaworks, while still keeping TV3 in Dolby sound?

I'd like to see C42 kept as a music channel, but with actual themed shows on it.. (alternative, hip hop, classic rock etc) and the odd music documentary or concert.

Of course C42 would probably need a name change, as it's kinda meaningless without a C4 sister-channel.

As for TV3+1, you could restyle it as a male-targeted channel (ala Dave channel in the UK) as it is a gap in the NZ market that hasn't been filled yet.. I think one of the Australian networks has done this for one of their Freeview sub-channels.

Has anyone here seen the Australian Freeview channels? Do you think their programming is becoming better than our Freeview? At a glimpse it looks like it's stronger on paper.

Every indication I have encountered says it should be possible. Remember that TVNZ used to run Sport Extra on their mux as well (admittedly TV One and TV 2 were still 720p back then)! Someone said earlier in the thread that the bandwidth required for 5.1AC3 audio would be similar to the bandwidth required to take C4 HD. I don't know if that statement is correct but I've heard that TVNZ is looking to add 5.1 AC3 to TV One and TV 2 before the end of the year. I've heard TVNZ and Mediaworks use different encoders (TVNZ => Harmonic, Mediaworks => Tanberg), however I don't expect the bandwidth efficiency is too different. If TVNZ can add AC3 then Mediaworks should *technically* be able to upgrade C4 to HD.

Of course that is only considering the availability of bandwidth on existing muxes and doesn't consider the costs. Would Mediaworks have to pay for more bandwidth on "their" mux, or are they paying for the full capacity already (meaning they would have to reallocate bandwidth)? I know that I *don't* want C4 HD if it is at the cost of quality!!!

I'd be interested to know how much money broadcasters stand to save after analog switch-off. Every newspaper/website article I've read says media companies are feeling the pinch right now with lowered advertising revenue and reduced government funding. We know jobs have been cut at TVNZ. I am hoping that analog switch off will reduce the pressure (no more paying for analog channel bandwidth, more digital terrestrial bandwidth available) and allow these discussions to become moot. It feels *really* petty to be discussing whether one measly channel will go HD when other countries seem to have hundreds of channels, many of which are HD. Makes me frustrated...

Well last time I looked there was provision for another 2 mux on Freeview HD. Of course they aren't active and goodness knows how they'd be allocated.

You'd like to think that before any more are switched on, the current ones get used to capacity though.

Not everyone is willing to share muxes, and Sky might get a lot of the new muxes that are created after analog switch off. In fact 5 muxes (well 10 in total, but really only 5 main plus identical "copies" of each as infill meaning the equivalent of 5) might be all that is ever allocated to Freeview...

Although you do have to consider the size of their population compared to our 4 Million - that's what the advertisers who fund our commercial TV channels will be looking at.

I thought the cost of the shows was based on population as well, and since there are less channels, there would be better viewership figures than other countries with 100s of channels available.
