plug it directly into your pc using an ethernet capable. most network cards are smart enough that they can turn a patch cable into a crossover cable without an adapter. it could be a router firewall issue. failing that make sure windows firewall is off + router has the appropriate ports open as well.

Before plugging it into the PC (it's in another room) I found that it's mac address is showing in the Router DHCP client list, and it has IP 10.1.1.100.

Windows Firewall has 4 exceptions for HDHomeRun, all ticked.

I can ping 10.1.1.100 and browsing there, shows a link for drivers and installation notes from SiliconDust, (which I already have, and are using).

Still nothing found with it's own setup program. Can anyone confirm if it does work for them with XP ?

Not sure if it needs certain ports open, maybe it doesn't but ping + being able to browse it using your browser (prob port 80 or 8080) doesn't mean that the other ports it might need (if any) are open. Anyways the manual should tell you if ports need to be opened on the router.

Don't forget that it is not just the SD software - Quick TV, Config and Setup - that have to be cleared in the firewall. You also have to clear any other software that uses the tuner (eg. WMC, N-PVR, MediaPortal).

If I were you I would test with firewall(s) disabled to start with. You may have both 3rd party (eg. Comodo, ZoneAlarm etc.) and the Windows firewall to deal with.

Also, make sure you restarted the PC after installing the Silicondust software package... just in case.

Use the rescan button in the HDHomeRun Config software until your HDHR is discovered.

Have rebooted PC and also tried with Firewall OFF. Still nothing.

I did get an answer from the Aussie agents (they also suggested I turn the firewall off) but I have to contact Kaiser Bill for support as this is rebadged. Their model does work with XP and it's very rare for it not to be detected.

The Config rescan button doesn't even indicate its trying, ad the rest of that screen shows nothing. The Setup auto detect is where it tells me 0 devices.

Going to try with another computer (also XP)

I take it the HDHR is being assigned an IP address by your router (ie. DHCP is on) and that IP address is in the same subnet as the IP address of the PC that you're trying to stream to?

I think I've got a dud. On the 2nd machine I connected it directly to the LAN port and green light
started flashing.

The book says
Flashing: the HDHomeRun is working to acquire an IP address. If the HDHomeRun is directly
connected to a PC the LED will continue to flash until the PC makes contact with the HDHomeRun.

If the HDHomeRun is connected directly to the PC (rather than a switch or router) it may
take up to 3 minutes for the PC to be able to detect the HDHomeRun. This delay can be
eliminated by configuring PC's network interface to a static IP address in the 169.254.x.y
range, subnet mask 255.255.0.0. No default gateway is needed.

After 25 mins it's still flashing. I don't want to play with the Network settings as everything else is working. LAN, DLNA etc.

If your PC is really old (probably is because you use XP) there is a chance you need a cross over cable rather than a patch cable. Newer network cards automatically cross-over when they have a direct connection, older network cards need a cross over adapter or a cross over cable. So there is a chance it might be failing with a direct connection because of this rather than a failure of the device.

Basically you're not gonna be using this via a direct connection to your PC anyways, but there are two reasons the test may fail 1. the device doesn't work 2. you need a cross over cable, probably the latter.

I think so. The address assigned is 10.1.1.100 and my comp is 10.1.1.6

I can ping 10.1.1.100 from a command prompt.

You may be right, nothing in the book about that but is something to ask the Help desk. Whatever the problem is, will find out eventually and advise here in case it helps someone else.

Major anticlimax and disappointment though. BTW the 2nd comp is still XP but much newer.

As promised I'm advising what/why my HDHomeRun didn't work. I'm not assigning IP addresses automatically (to stop DLNA devices changing IPs and loosing their profiles) and it was simply a case of adding the IP manually.

Of course knowing what to add, and where, is pretty essential. The VERY HELPFUL guys at Kaiser Bass came online and connected to my machine to set it all up.

It seems to exceeding all expectations and I'm very thankful for the recommendation here.

I'm still using XP and the supplied 'TotalMedia' program. Only had it going a few hours but the picture looks excellent. Unsure if using 'hardware acceleration' or or not and haven't found a setting yet.

Now to find out how to schedule a recording and if the EPG can be bypassed so you can be sure to get the end of a program.
