That sounds great. Any idea whether it can output over HDMI at the same time as component? If so, this would be a very good prospect. Many thanks in advance.

These eXtra Terrestrial $290 ...Can you attach an external hard Drive to it and record HDTV? The guy selling these on Trade Me say's he has 3000 in stock so why is there a delay? If I can't get this delivered before Friday I'll go and buy a Zinwell for $349 at DSE or fork out the extra bling for the impressive Vantage HD 6000T $499

Baz, as far as I am aware you cant yet record to the USB on the ET. I rang him just now and he said he is shipping as we speak, so I guess I will find out tomorrow.

Yeah my order has finally been sent today, and my account has been charged, so hopefully this does mean they're on their way!  Baz, check your PM email.

I bought a DSE one in the mean time so I'll be able to comment on them both having owned each type.

Don't count on the USB HDD record thing any time soon.  This requires a factory firmware update and the distributor will have to push for this.  There's three types of boxes on the market at the mo, expensive zinwell ones, expensive hdd record one with no epg and cheap as extra terrestrial one with epg and faint possibility of future hdd record functionality.

It's been mentioned several times already that the ET box cannot record to an external HDD _yet_ but the supplier claims it will be able to when the next firmware update arrives. Take that any way you like, but if it does happen, and this box runs well, it should blow everything else out of the water on price anyway. To be honest, I think you should consider just about any other box except the Zinwell/DSE. It's short on features runs hot as hell, and it's high on price for what you get. You could also look at the Draco which has been well received, and there are a few others around it you check local sites.  I saw his comment about having 3000 in stock, but he also told me they've been held up by the Olypics and they'll be here this week. meanwhile, he appears to have a small number he's selling on Trademe. Bloody frustrating. BTW, his site does claim it has a timer function, so that's a good start.

Great, just received notification that my sample ET has been sent today also. If they're any good, I'll be able to sell these with a conscience. I'll let you guys know what I find, as will others here I guess.

Thanks ventolin. Any news on what happens to the exterrnal HDD when not recording and when the box is powered on or in standby? The reason I ask is because if the drive is active most of the time, this could mean a short life for it. Still I guess HDDs are pretty cheap these days.

The HDD is only on when the receiver is on, so when receiver is put into standby HDD turns off.

Have been running a sample Extra Terrestrial for ove a week now from a friend who lent it to me. Wanted it back before the games opening ceremony.  Just picked up my own one now.  Bought from Glowgoods on TM and Im not disappointed.  Far better thant the Zinwell one I bought and sold quickly for it obvious limitations.

This receiver has High Def on the Component out whereas the Zinwell and the DSE doesnt because of the CP (copy Protection).  Extra outputs are handy too.  Checked out the power consumption - extremely low and thats a bonus.  Zinwell I could fry an egg on it.  I'm very happy with the Freeview 8 day EPG  MHEG5 and its exactly the same as the Zinwells.  It has an excellent remote and is more responsive than the Zinwell/ DSE which are the same units.

This guy is a little mis-informed about the ET version he is selling, claiming it own HDD, recording etc

With everyone wanting a good PVR function on a HD receiver no one is really looking at what is required for the USB 2.0 to deliver High def to a HDD.  When I asked a sales rep about the Strong HD receiver, he was sure it didnt work and was needing a firmware update.  Another said it only recorded SD Standard definition.  Anyone know the true story.   I have a top of the line Satellite receiver with a USB ext PVR function and at times there is breakup of audio and picture.  The drive is a top of the line ext USB Sata Seagate. Records SD.  Maybe need a firewire connection or even an Esata connection for HD.
