One word. DRM

And don't go blaming Freeview - it is not their choice. Blame the content producers who are demanding DRM and who (like the music industry) seem to regard all their customers as theives.

At this stage I've heard or read nothing to suggest that the ICT flag won't be forced to be used on all devices and HD media come 2012 as planned.

Shame there isn't a manual available to inform purchasers - would be nice to know what features/limitations the unit has. ? ?HD over component would be a nice addition - can't claim copyright issues, it's a freeking recorder!

HD over component will never occur with any Freeview certified boxes.

Glad I've got an uncertified box then..

In the manual it appears that button 23 will allow you to select either Auto/1080i/720p/576p/576i

So looks like an Auto option is present

It's interesting to see that Freeview now also mention "Hard Drive addons" - allows you to record digital television using your existing Freeview approved satellite or terrestrial receiver.

I had heard for some time there was going to be an official Zinwell software update to allow this (it's a feature already available on some other firmware). Maybe it's going to turn out to be true.

i couldn't see anything in the manual to illustrate how you can adjust the timer bookings to pad the booking by a few mins to make sure you get the whole show.
Unless it can cleverly tell from the EPG when the show REALLY does start and REALLY does finish.... Have noticed the EPG on my SAT unit is saying shows are starting 1-2 mins before they're timed to start.... But that doesn't help the end of the show, unless it pads 5 mins on just in case.
Anyone care to comment?

I would doubt it. While it may seem logical to have some sort of broadcast signal, I dont think any pvrs do this.

I still fail to understand how a TV channel that runs on a computerised schedule can end up running late! It's not like their is live content that always runs over!

The buffer is 2 mins before and 10 mins after

Cheers Brunzy!! I know the topfield PVR units let you specify a padding/buffer and I read the Oz Tivo box had a setting for something similar too, so figured there must be something similar in the workings.
That's quite a sales feature - surprised it's not in the manual, or listed somewhere!

The 8 day epg core info is in the MHEG-5 guide.

The EIT data contains TV Anytime format information that is used to assist scheduling and features like Series Link.

In the future the EIT might be updated to EIT Actual which can provide acurate start times.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

I heard from someone a while ago that Zinwell were releasing an official pvr firmware + USB HDD combo in Australia, and if you google long enough you can find an image of a Zinwell USB drive that looks like it sits under and matches the DVB-T box.

I have a NAS that has LAN+USB, it would be awesome to be able to record onto that using the Zinwell via USB and then watch the recordings using XBMC or another media player attached to the network.

EDIT:
Also noticed an anomaly in some reporting on this receiver. This article in Stuff says:
"The box would store 80 hours of high definition TV programmes"

The DSE website says:
"250GB Hard Drive – up to 60 hours of high definition recording"

20 hours of HD content is quite a bit. Any ideas?

DSE's website is now saying that while stores don't have stock, the online store does have them available.

Are they in stock in other shops? I see the NL's website doesn't mention anythig about them not being available?

If available, has anyone bit the bullet yet and bought one? If DSE is selling them now for $1000, it's a possibility they'll have them on sale post Xmas - and if we can find an "early adopter" to review it, that would be great!
