Just because you can broadcast in HD doesn't mean you will. A couple of good examples are

1. TV2 - shows a sitcom Better With You in HD and follows immediately with their highly promoted American Idol in SD! They say hot off the satellite so perhaps they are not willing to pay for a HD version or the bandwidth?

2. TV3 - House in SD (rumoured to be because TV3 doesn't want to pay extra for a HD version).

With the good upscaling going on these days I would almost prefer SD/DD5.1 over HD/AAC

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

House does look good even though upscaled and an HD version would offer no great benefit in my eyes either, American Idol however is quite horrible to look at and is so poor in respect to definition, or the lack of, I wouldn't actually allow its broadcast from the current 480i source.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

ilovemusic: The FOUR channel bug could have been worse.

I have some programmes off SyFy channel in the US, they have a channel bug plus a couple of lines of promo stuff that changes through the programme.

Oh, for the old days when our screens were bug-free.

You think that's bad.  Check out a download of Season 8 of Project Runway and  see the humongous Lifetime  bug..

Yes bug free, Voiceover free and squashed end credit free.  Those were the days.  Remember those stupid people some years ago who cutout and put those TV3 logo bugs on their TV screens and entered a competition to win a prize thinking that by placing it there in some magic ways their bug would be recognized by the TV and they would win..

You could probably get a torrent version of AI in 720p and DD audio faster than TV2's time to broadcast their crappy version from a satellite feed :-)

Though to add some data - I don't watch it so I don't care. I only mentioned it as evidence of the lamentable state of HDTV in TV, especially TVNZ.
