It is fine as long as they don't take something that is shown in HD somewhere else and show in SD on their channel.

Judging by what they will be showing a lot of their content will be live when most of NZ is sleeping so removing 1/2 hour of a 2 hour broadcast will be done. And if they follow the channel 9 model with adverts during the 'live half' you can start recording on a PVR device when the coverage starts then start watching 10 minutes later removing adverts and finish at the same time.

And not to be too cynical but a lot of those that want 'FREE' TV complain about advertising just as much.

RustyViewer: If it's the last Kordia spot available, does that mean no more room for channels on freeview, or is Kordia only one of many providers of channels? Excuse my ignorance, maybe this is basic knowledge to some here.

Ok, here's how it's working at the moment - as far as I know.

There's 3 multiplexes (mux) broadcasting for Freeview currently:

* TVNZ mux - carrying TV1, TV2, U, and TV1 +1
* Mediaworks mux - carrying TV3, FOUR, C4, and TV3 +1
* Kordia mux - carrying an assortment of channels not owned by TVNZ & Mediaworks - mostly niche channels & regional channels that vary from site to site.

As far as TERRESTIAL Freeview goes, Sommet Sports is set to be the last channel squeezed into the Kordia mux.

After that there's supposedly no more room for channels in that multiplex, and any more channels on Freeview HD (UHF) would either need to be carried on TVNZ/Mediaworks mux, or wait until a 4th or 5th mux goes live

If I recall correctly there's provision in the UHF band plan for 2 more mux across all the current Freeview HD sites - covering 86% of the population.. not sure if there's more than that at certain sites like Auckland.

As for Freeview Satellite, apparently it's 2 transponders (satellite circuits) are already full - and all the remaining space on the NZ-facing beams is taken by other operators *COUGHskyCOUGH*..

Until there's another satellite, or someone frees up some space on the current one there's unlikely to be any more FTA satellite channels in the near future.

Lack of space is one reason why Freeview satellite is not HD for TV1, 2 & 3. (Cost, technology, policy decisions being among the others..)

I think that covers off the situation. If anyone can correct or clarify this, please do..

I am more concerned with part that said "..on the Kordia terrestrial Freeview platform."

That just means they're going to be on Kordia's mux.

Confirmed tonight on their Facebook page - when asked what multiplex they'll be on, they replied "We are the lucky last on Kordia".

But in JDA areas we don't really have a Kordia mux.

And today, someone asked if they were going to the JDA areas, they replied with "we are weighing up the cost and the demand at the moment."

well i wont be watching this station due to the fact they told me today you need a freeview approved receiver that those without a freeview receiver will not be able to view their channel.

I can see many people not bothering buying a new box just to get this.

Freeview doesn't have any encryption so I can't see how this is possible (someone with more technical knowledge will probably be able to confirm or deny!)

This was posted on their FB page in a reply:
"Hi Richard, I do not know where you are getting your information from but it is incorrect. We are using the functions of the platform for what it was designed for. There are 1.8 Million Freeview approved devices in the market and we have taken the decision to use the MHEG functions carefully and we believe that it will add to the viewing enjoyment. If viewers do not have a Freeview terrestrial device they will still be able to view the channel via the internet."

And another reply further down the page:

"Hi Peter, you will need MHEG5 on your receiver or TV to view this channel"
