eXDee: Mauricio - Since you seem to be so good at organising interviews and Q&A, how about try and get one setup for TVNZ and Mediaworks, or even Sky? That is, if people have things to ask them.

Think that would be a great idea... if they are willingCool

sbiddle: ..
TV2 was still transmitting in 720p (upscaled HD) so the bandwidth requirements are no different now from what they were then.

I had heard some time ago it was a case of TVNZ simply not having the capability to transmit 5.1 due to their ongoing upgrade to digital based storage. The Olympics were directly from a live feed.

Let's hope TVNZ can answer some of these questions since they are letting the side down!

eXDee: Thanks a lot for the answers.
I really wish sky would be more up front about prime, however i suppose it's in their interest not to attract attention to freeview so they don't loose customers.

Sky openly disclosed earlier this year that they were already in the process of planning their own DTT network and negotiating with suppliers. It wouldn't surprise me if Prime is never on Freeview but Sky's own DTT network.

I've heard rumors lately of Sky trying to court other operators (with the Racing Agency being one) into joining their network. The idea of two DTT networks seems crazy when Sky are claiming joining Freeview costs money and yet they're happy to spend a lot more to build their own infrastructure. There is huge infighting between Sky, the Government and MED over ASO and licence renewals for their UHF spectrum which run out in 2010 and have to be signed off by September 2009.

Just look up what Sky tried to do in the UK..

Their DTT network wouldn't be freeview as it would be subscription only. They might be required or decide to provide Prime FTA but the idea would be to replace their existing analogue UHF network of 5 channels with 40-50 H.264 digital channels.

Does anybody see a business case in Sky rolling out a DVB-T PayTV network to duplicate their DVB-S network?

I think you would have to be off your rocker to think that this made any commercial sense at all. Even if you had the money and could convince folks that it made sense (and I think they would have had to had a few too many drinks) the RMA would kill you.

Folks, I've managed to get Brent Impey, CEO Mediaworks (TV3) to participate. I've contacted him directly now and asked for material (bio, pictures) to start the thread.

Working on the others still...

Not really. It's simply a matter of negotiating space on the towers (which are typically owned by Kordia) and then putting the infrastructure in place. Building the network is the easy part. The question is really what business case Sky would have for rolling out a terrestrial pay tv service when they already have a nationwide satellite service.

Hi there,

Just a couple of questions for freeview on their DTV-T platform:

1/ with the present transmission licences you have; how many extra channels could be added using the free space? (obsviously dependant on signal type SD/HD etc?)

2/ with satellite I could understand it would expensive to offer space to other broadcasters; but with DTV-T, could free space be offered cheaply (even if it was only lower quality SD) to free to air international channels like BBC World, DWTV, VOA etc with possibly a small amount local advertising to cover some cost? I would think that such a move would significantly boost veiwing numbers and would eventually improve everyones bottom lines?

As promised, here's a discussion where you can ask questions to TV3's Brent Impey (CEO).

Folks, I see a few questions that need answers.

If you have anything else to ask - this is your chance. I will close this thread again next Monday and forward questions to Freeview - so ask now... PVR, new channels, etc...

As the response to the new TVworks channel 3+1 seems to have been luke warm to say the best; and it would appear that TVworks does not have any new content to bring to our screens, would it be possible to negotiate with them to relieve them of their obligations to another channel by early 2010, and give it to another operator who could provide something different?

I think most people would feel that they need 4+1 like a hole in the head!
