Freeview – Freeview doesn’t provide or pay for transmission services so that’s a question for the broadcasters and transmission providers.

So Freeview dont have access to bandwidth.  So yes you missed the important point.

By quite a wide margin too, it would seem.  Thanks.

Will Triangle/Stratos be broadcast on Freeview|HD?

Freeview – Yes from March 2011.

...and I didn't ask about Cue TV - anyone know any details about Cue launching on DVB-T?

bfginger: Mentalinc, it's more like a group marketing platform than a unitary provider like Sky.

And that sums it up. Well put.

They kinda suck at the marketing part then if they cant contact the members of their group to answer the questions people have asked.

I was a bit disappointed as the responses were a bit on the lame side. Essentially they ducked virtually every question - with a series of "we don't make any decisions, we don't know why decisions are made, we aren't responsible for anything..... the dog ate my homework" responses.

About the only thing they did apart from disclaiming responsibility for anything, was take a thinly-veiled swipe at Sky over sporting fixtures and frequency allocation.

I find it difficult to believe that Freeview knows so little about its own business, and the motivations/intentions of its partners, that the responder couldn't have provided much more informative answers to many of these questions if they wanted to.

I fully agree with JimmyH.

Personally, I'm disappointed by many of the answers given here except for the news about Triangle/Stratos coming to Freeview|HD.

If Freeview is a group marketing platform then why can't they ask (read: require) their broadcasters to answer the questions that they can't answer? I know they said they would pass on some of the specific questions like the white pixel one, but what about the more general ones like "more channels"? Surely it is in both Freeview and the broadcasters' interests to answer these questions more adequately!

It is also very strange that Freeview have no influence over the quality standards of the platform (that they have to advertise - I don't envy that position!!!), yet they have stringent technical requirements about content protection. I guess they want to encourage as many channels as possible to join so they set the quality bar as low as possible (read: non-existent). Yes there are other baseline technical compliance requirements but they seem to assume that if it is digital then it is high quality. I reject that assumption! I'm not going to be pleased if broadcasters start reducing bitrates - in my opinion some of the satellite channels are barely watchable as it is. Even if you can't enforce minimum bitrates (or better: effective bitrates which take into account broadcaster source content quality) then at least require that the aspect ratio is correct! Surely there is no difference in bandwidth charges for providing content in the correct aspect ratio...

In response to the lame answers to questions about "more channels" and Al Jazeera etc.: I want to know what Freeview do to advertise themselves to broadcasters. Have they invited international FTA channel providers to join? Are they in regular contact or negotiating with any of these providers? Most of the FTA channels seem to be news/doco, religious or foreign language channels, but I'd still be happy to have them on board. It is an open platform after all.

The white pixel seems to have gone now, I have not noticed it but I am not using the computer screen on freeview at the moment, and the TV still has some cropping going on I think (seems stupid to have a 1080 panel, and then scale 1080 content and crop it IMO)

Yes, I think you're right. No bright pixel here on DVB-T (Manawatu) or DVB-S...
