bjorn: Sending the email today?

I was hoping to have a few more votes....will see what the doodle vote looks like later today then I will send the results in. Will be sending to Prime, MediaWorks and SCEE, you guys are also more than welcome to use the link and send as well. Maybe the more of us who complain and send the link the better??
My gut feeling is both MediaWorks and Prime are wanting too much $$$ and SCEE do not want to pay it. Would be interesting what TVNZ etc are charging for their EPG??

Just thought I would let everyone know I have sent an email to the appropriate “powers to be” at SCE New Zealand, TV3 http://www.facebook.com/TV3NZ#!/TV3NZ?sk=friendactivity and Prime http://www.facebook.com/#!/PrimeTV?sk=wall (guys add your comments on facebook as well) Lets see what happens!!

 Prime TV

PlayTV would be one of the largest selling DVB-T PVR’s in New Zealand, PlayTV is an add on for the PS3 converting the PlayStation 3 into a HD PVR, now since the device has been on the market it is missing the 7 day EPG content from all the Prime TV listings. Is there any update on this? One of the fantastic features PlayTV has is “community favourites” which is a real time “people meter” on any pa...rticular night there are hundreds on line in New Zealand, in real time you do see all the networks and it shows some very interesting statistics which I am sure in particular Prime TV would be interested in, due to the EPG not fully functional “community favourites” is also not fully functioning which is putting a poor light on the ratings. We have also put together a poll "Get Prime and MediaWorks onto PlayTV EPG!!" the poll is on going and as you can see it has gathered momentum http://doodle.com/dmx3kgztwfnp3pts
There is also a very active forum running on Geekzone http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=83&topicid=96060&page_no=1 regarding this matter.
Would be interested in your comments.

Mediaworks

Hi we have put together poll "Get Prime and MediaWorks onto PlayTV EPG!!" the poll is on going and as you can see it has gathered momentum http://doodle.com/dmx3kgztwfnp3pts also there is a very active forum on Geekzone regarding this subje...ct http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=83&topicid=96060 I would have thought it would be to the networks advantage to have full EPG on PlayTV? Can the general public be assured everything is being done to sort out this issue?

Sony Computers NZ

Hi Mark sorry for being a pain but I have been asked to forward this poll onto you "Get Prime and MediaWorks onto PlayTV EPG!!" the poll is on going and as you can see it has gathered momentum http://doodle.com/dmx3kgztwfnp3pts I would have thought it would be to the networks advantage to have full EPG on PlayTV? It does surprise me all three parties have not come to an arrangement over this matter?  Anyway thanks Mark for all your support

Cheers

The witholding of Prime is all about nobbling potential competition. With PlayTV the PS3 is a potential pay TV competitor to Sky. History suggests that the EPG will only be given to those who chain themselves so tightly to the Sky wagon that any attempt to jump off will result in being dragged to their death at high speed.

To sum up: Mediaworks = reasonable, Sony = feckless (or so big that they don't really care about NZ), Sky = evil monopolist borg. Set expectations accordingly.

I think that is being a bit hard on Sony, a lot of the blame also rests well and truly with Freeview NZ adopting the MHEG5 EPG which is inferior to the likes of the PlayTV EPG

The big difference here being that the mheg5 epg is delivered with the signal and not via broadband. It was the best broadcastable epg available when freeview was launched. Adding internet capability to freeview boxes and idtvs shouldn't be necessary for epg. If playtv is so good, why the ridiculous small hdd in the ps3?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

And why doesn't NZs ps3 support mheg as it does in other countries for that matter?

I have a 500gb HDD in mine and it is fine, Sony have made it easy to upgrade HDD anyway. I know SCE NZ ran a special 320GB PS3 with PlayTV. I would debate that the MHEG5 EPG was "the best broadcastable epg available when freeview was launched" Why Freeview did not use the EIT EPG is beyond me, the MHEG5 EPG is slow and hard to navigate and use. SCEE would be stupid to use the MHEG5 EPG on PlayTV as it would not graphically look right + plus it would be a backwards step in my opinion. Why Freeview terrestrial can’t use both MHEG5 and EIT is beyond me, EIT EPG is already being used for “now and next” anyway extra bandwidth would be next to nothing, this way everyone has the best of both worlds.

Eit doesn't support series link. But then I guess with playtv's single tuner you don't need that.

PlayTV has twin HD tuners, You can also upgrade your HDD in the ps3 like I have to 1TB

and if Eit doesn't support series link how does it work for PlayTV in the UK?

Edit: I'm guessing the series link stuff is done via the online tvtv data.

I know series link does work in the UK and they are not using tvtv data. The tvtv data was a work around for New Zealand to get around the MHEG5 issue.

Sorry, I must have missed the dual tuner feature when I had one. I could only record one show at a time on my PlayTV, maybe mine was faulty?

One tuner is dedicated for recording the other is for watching and live tv pause.

Sadly you can't record two channels at the same time. But you can watch one channel and record another.

Unless you plug the playtv tuner box into a computer, in which case the software will detect it as two independent tuners and let you do with them as you wish.  Wink

I expect the PS4 will be out before anything is sorted on the playtv front.  Originally it offered much but with the developments of the likes of TIVO I think playtv has long had it's day, even if they do fix the EPG.
