LennonNZ: First of all.. I need proof it is running any GPL based software.. ie Linux kernel? busy box etc? anyone help?

Well there is the admission of that, the linked PDF on their website, it mentions "Applicable to all variants of MTV3000, MTV3100, MTV3500, MTV3600, MTV5000 for Hong Kong and New Zealand"

Then when I log in:
BusyBox v1.00 (2010.06.09-09:27+0000) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

Yes.. busybox and linux kernel.. Both Licenced under GPLv2. I have emailed pixel magic (the makers) 1st (I'll start at the other end this time) and see how it goes..

As the distributor of it is on geekzone.. maybe they want to comment on this issue and why they didn't do the right thing (as far as I know) on day 1.

I've been around the internet and BBS's for too many years so maybe it was me

There's a new firmware in the downloads directory. No release notes as yet, and not on the official download page yet.

I seem to remember a post in another thread that mentioned S-video not working properly, and there would be a fix for it.

It fixed the bug I reported in my post, #506119 on page 54, of this thread. I don't know if anything else was included in the update.

Cool!

Looking back at your posts I see you first asked about the freezing problem in mid July and then reported it was confirmed to be a bug in mid August (A few days ago). Presumably Hong Kong implemented the fix. That's a responsive turnaround.

Did you email or phone support?

Ah, they've changed the URL from www.magictv.co.nz to www.mymagictv.co.nz.

Latest firmware is at http://www.mymagictv.co.nz/downloads/mtv3600_3_16NZ.zip

As it is only 5 months old, I first contacted Harvey Norman in Palmerston North, where I bought it.
After explaining the problem, they said I would have to demonstrate it to them & they would either send it to Dish or, upon instructions from Dish, send it to a local technician. The turn around was stated as 10 to 14 days.

I live in Masterton & it is a 2.5 hour return trip, costing $25 in petrol. Need to do that again to pick it up. I asked Harvey N if it could be couriered back to me & they said it would cost me $11. Harvey's insisted that I had to demo the fault, so I could not sent it to them.

I then emailed Dish telling them about the fault & what Harvey's had said. Having had no reply after 3 days, I phoned Dish & they informed me that they had been hard hit with the flu & had not looked at emails. They read my email while I was on the phone & told me to send it directly to them, for a much faster turn around.
Initially, on the phone, they thought it was a hardware fault & mentioned replacing the Motherboard.

I couriered it to them & they received it on a Tuesday & I phoned on Thursday to be told it was a software fault. They had informed Pixel Magic same day & said that they would send it back & when the updated firmware was available, for me to either download it or update over the Internet.

They phoned on Friday to tell me the version 16 firmware had arrive & that they would load it  & they couriered the box back on Monday.. I have dealt with quite a few warranty returns in my life & this was most impressive.

Dealt with a technician named Waldo & give him full marks for service. Another chap named Craig was most helpful as well.

OK, an update on upgrading my HDD. I followed the procedure Mac2008 detailed in post # 341690 and that gpf reminded me about in post # 502495.

Last night I successfully installed a Barracuda Green SATA 6Gb/s 2TB HDD (Model No ST2000DL003). It gave me the following free space: HD 346hour, SD 647hour.

Then after a crash course in Linux (figuring out that I needed to be logged in as root, and Google for the answers) I was then able to transfer all my recorded programs and scheduled recordings across to the new HDD.

Comparing specs, the 5900RPM Seagate has slightly faster data transfer and quicker seek times, slightly lower power consumption and is slightly quieter than the 7200RPM Hitachi. I will update you on whether there are any issues arising from the HDD change.

Thanks to everyone who provided information and ideas.

Maybe next weekend I shall try the firmware update kindly provided by 2lostkiwis. I am confident that even if it has issues, the Rescue procedure I used to install the HDD will also recover from a corrupt firmware.

Ringo.

Hi everyone, here's an updated patch for the V3.16NZ firmware (only tested on my MagicTV so far): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/38226449/MTV3600v316NZpatchv12.zip

@fatjulio: thanks for pointing out the error level mistake in the update.cmd - this has been fixed.

It seems it was more than the one bug was fixed because quite a few files changed. For those that are interested, here's a comparison between the V3.15NZ and V3.16NZ firmware across the three different file systems (romfs, squashfs and jffs2):

Cheers,
Ian.

Hehe, I unexpectedly found Wine (Using "wine cmd") almost runs that script perfectly. I hadn't considered Wine having a command line at all when I was trying to get DosEmu to do the job.

There appears to be a bug in Wine's handling of the rename command. It can't rename outside of current directory. So, a quick tweak of the script to step in and out of the updated directory and away it went. :)

Hi. Guys. I am a mere layman. I don't really understand the technical stuff. Can you please tell me if the 3.16 firmware is worth installing, and if it has fixed up the ongoing ffwd/frwd problem. Thanks.

First Response from Digital Trading Co who are the distributors in Australia regarding getting the source code.

"Really, you don't want to ask the people who actually have access to it?"

Thanks Digital Trading Co.. you failed... No response from the NZ or People in Hong Kong..
