see 10.2 or 10.3 from your manual , rescue procedure, pretty sure its the only way to go back using a usb stick.

No. All you need to do is put the firmware on a stick, and goto the firmware upgrade in the menu. It'll go up or down versions without any hassle.

I emailed out the modified firmware to 7 people, probably everyone here :-). I have heard back a successful upgrade from 5 people and haven't heard from 2 either way yet.

I'll take this as enough testing because I believe now even if there are any problems it should be possible to revert to the official firmware - I haven't heard of any bricking, not that I would expect to.

This firmware is based on 3.17NZ and it adds an http server that is running on port 80, just point a browser at the IP address of your MagicTV. To find the IP address press the MagicTV button -> Settings -> System -> System Info.
 The root directory of the http server points to the hard drive and there are two subdirectories: 
/tv1/ contains metadata on the recorded programs 
/1/ts/ contains recorded programs split into chunks

Sometimes it's easier to edit a program before downloading, because editing joins all the chunks into one easily downloadable file. It is possible to download the chunks and join them on a different machine though.

interesting , i thought it put up a message that you already had the latest firmware and no action required ? i tried this to roll back to 3.12b at one point and with out rescue i was unable to go to an earlier version of the software .. hmm why did it do that just for me ?!? mum always reckoned i was special hahaha

About the HDMI Startup Mode.
I emailed Magic support & asked the following:"In the Magic MTV3600TD settings, there is the option for normal or fast HDMI startup mode. The manual (page 54) does not explain what the difference between the two are. Please tell me".

Here is their reply: "Hi, This is the negotiating speed between the magic and the TV on bootup. If the TV works using the HDMI cable then no need to change it , If you cannot get a picture then you try slowing down the negotiating speed to see if it works then".

I got tied up with other stuff and was a bit slow getting to install these new patches.
I'm happy to say the new version installed OK and I haven't noticed any detrimental effects that I would put down to the patches.
The http access on my pc revealed all the files as expected ...... brilliant.

I had deleted my RWC series schedule as there was a match or two I wasn't interested in.
After applying the new patched upgrade I reinstated my RWC series record, and suffered the same problems as Bob reported in #527120.
I put this down to an EPG glitch as while Nutters Club was scheduled, the Rugby following it was not.

Maybe it's a 3.17 firmware bug??
Has anyone else installed an unpatched 3.17 and encountered any series scheduling problems?

I've reported my problems with the EPG under 3.17 to Magic support and they're looking into it.

I've also managed to roll-back to 3.16 using a USB stick. Interestingly enough, the Firmware update screen said something like "Current firmware NZ3.17", "New Firmware NZ3.16" which is not logical. However it did perform the roll-back.

Also discovered that 3.16 did exactly the same strange thing with the EPG and the To Do list.

I'm beginning to wonder whether it's someone at Maori TV that's stuffed up the series coding for the EPG entries and not the Magic box's fault at all. I've set a few series recordings on TV3 and they seem to work okay.

My work-around has been to set each individual rugby game to record (rather than a series record) and that seems to work okay. (In the meantime I'm recording the rugby on My PS3 Play TV as back-up.)

It seems that the EPG problems from Maori TV was their stuff up and they've fixed it now as it seems to be working OK. I was able to delete my Te Kaea scheduling without it removing my RWC entries tonight.

My backup PVR is a TiVo, which is not a lot of use as it doesn't have EPG data for MTV (or Prime for that matter) I don't know how the EPG data gets from the broadcasters to the TiVo system for their server connection but it is regularly stuffed up in the process, particularly in regards to flags for series or season passes, as they call them. Also with duplicate and repeat flags.
I've never been able to ascertain whose errors they are as they never own up to them.

Another MTV EPG stuff up??
I set up to record Semi Final 1 of the RWC but wanted to record SF2 from another channel so as to get HD rather than the SD which is all that MTV offers.
I discovered though that MTV have linked both events so that if you select SF1 then SF2 is record enabled.
Despite being separate EPG events they are linked to become a single choice in MTV's EPG.
This applies to both Sat and Sunday's semifinal matches.
