Thanks Silverlake. I hope they get back with a proper answer.

I am surprised none of the local kiwi papers have written anything about it. Obviously a lot of people in NZ have been watching SBS, and (if not for any technical reason) suddenly it has annoyed someone enough who was in a position to get it pulled. I wonder who?

If we find out it was somebody with political clout then I hope a mainstream paper prints it on the front page tomorrow. They've just stole the all the kid's lollies, and I think we have a right to know who and why.

I'm not sure if I am reading this correctly, but, this implies that they could switch that beam between

FNANZ FSS band National Australia Beam A plus
New Zealand Beam A
and
FNZA FSS band NZ beam A

on that transponder.

http://www.optus.com.au/dafiles/OCA/AboutOptus/NetworkCoverage/SharedStaticFiles/Documents/WS_D1_D2_Payload_2_0508.pdf

If that's correct, how are they denying access to NZ but leaving Australia unaffected without requiring a change in frequency for the Australian users?

Note - I'm just following my nose, I'm not 100% sure of the technology used for this, so, the above could be wrong.

I wonder what the full story is on this, as it doesn't appear to be in the NZ media, which is s sign that our news in NZ isn't that great. Perhaps we will hear about it in a week or two. This is one reason we don't want to also lose another channel, TVNZ7.

Unlikely its any big conspiracy....remember we're not really supposed to be getting it.

Thanks Silverlake for following up.

Isn't Intelsat 19 about to launch soon.. maybe there is a migration there for an initial offering.

Is there any chance of picking up Optus C1 from the same dish as I use to pick up Optus D1 as it is the only way I can receive New Zealand channels

While I realise that this will inevitably result in cries of "pass that man a tinfoil hat" I cannot help but see too much of a coincidence between the death of stratos, termination of tvnz 7 and the other concurrent moves that have come about with the end of analogue TV to encourage viewers across on to the sky platform, & this mysterious disappearance of sbs tassie.

This latest curtailment of choice means that anyone interested in overseas news and current affairs is now restricted to pay TV offerings since the free to air channels prefer running stories about a cat up a tree in waikikamukau than coverage of the latest imperial slaughter 'over there' those foreign places where unwhite peeps hang out.
I get the double layer tinfoil award for the observation that Murdoch controlled sky tv isn't exactly famous for its objective coverage of the FukUSi empire, but maybe I can peel back one layer by stating this shonky reeks of a locally made 'forprofit' buyoff of the trough guzzlers in wellington by local murdoch ring kissers.

The onlt thing that has me puzzled is 'how they did it' and I'm wondering if it wasn't the old 3.00am freeview 'firmware update' that has our boxes screening out all 12.000 to 12.500 MHz vertically oriented signals.

Of course that theory will bite the dust as soon as someone says they are using a non-freeview, self-configured box.
Still one does wonder how come at least one pair of heads belonging a tasmanian goat shagger hasn't complained about the change.

Skyped a cobber who lives on a indigenous community outside Katherine, he is going to try and send me a vast rig but that doesn't fix the problem for kiwis as a whole who appear to being deliberately denied access to a wide range of news & current affairs voices.

Yes, It's gone from non-Freeview DVB-S receivers too.

Now pass me the tin-hat. It was going to disappear. We all know that. But why this weekend? Who pulled the plug and why?

As for VAST* (http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/vast.html), what size dish does it take to receive the Ku-band signals in NZ on the C1 NA beam? The SatBeams footprint would suggest impossibility.

I already know about the VAST smartcard for geolocking who can get what, I only want to do this for the FTA shopping channels on the same signal (Tui billboard goes here). **

*The girlfriend is very disappointed about losing SBS Thursday nights in particular and she wants to know how to get it back.

** Or my campervan is parked somewhere on the Gunbarrel Highway. Take your pick.

Yes, but only if your dish is at least 85cm.

I chose to install a second 60cm dish because it's easier and cheaper.

From what I have read elsewhere, the SBS feed was being broadcast via Sat from Melbourne to Tas while a new Fibre Cable was being laid (a cable was seen to be cheaper than Sat Link).

That cable is now laid and the service has been switched over, therefore the Sat link is no longer required.

Funny to think that if our government had of thought a little about the TVNZ Charter and spoken to the Oz Government, they could have said that we (NZ) would pay for the Sat Link as a replacement of TVNZ 7.

I'm sure that a Sat Link would be much cheaper than running a TV station. It would also have given NZ and Oz businesses a chance to advertise their wares to each other.

Another missed opportunity by our wonderful NZ politicians.

If the Bass Strait cable is the right answer, why would SBS have stayed shtumm and not tell anyone that when asked? We know it was never for us, and we know it was going to be taken away from us, but you think that they'd be able to say that when asked.

Nothing to do with the NZ govenment, its up to the broadcasters where they want to broadcast, And the copyright issues with a NZ/Au channel would be huge

I can stop feeling a misplaced sense of guilt then.  I asked SkyTV on 2 May if they will be showing the Giro d'Italia.  They said no, not this year (and something about trying to negotiate rights - for next year maybe?).  I replied that I would watch the Giro highlights on SBS then.  Two days later - no SBS.  ohhhh noooo!
