Nety: And of course those that would normally jump all over a news story like this are well... the ones with the problem so chance of this making the news is well zero.

I am sure that if it did break the news then a lot of none tech people that have been thinking to themselfs this new Freeview is crap would come out of the woodwork and make some real noise. Noise that TV 1, 2 and to a lesser extent 3 could not ignore.

I am just glad I had the opertunity to switch to DVB-T before this all blew up.

It's really strange there has been absolutely no official news on the internet about the picture quality issues?
(that i can find) & I have emailed the Stuff.co.nz & also print media "The TV Guide" and no one has reported the issues (strange how they report all sorts of mundane TV & technology stories but no one will touch this issue!!!)

It would be great if EVERYONE could email or phone Freeview & ask them:
"Why they are not being upfront & honest on their official website about the quality drop on the Freeview satellite service since TVNZ & Mediaworks reduced their bitrates"

Freeview are the company we are stuck with to provide the free to air satellite broadcast platform in NZ and they won't even publicly acknowledge the picture quality problems everyone is experiencing.

Freeview don't provide the service, they are simply the body that promotes the service. TVNZ control the encoders for one transponder, and Kordia provide the equipment for the other, and they decide on the quality etc.

TVNZ have made some additional changes this week including encoder software updates to try and improve the quality.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

I just received a email confirming that the government won't/can't do anything to fix the picture quality issues on the freeview satellite feeds.

As Minister of Broadcasting, I am responsible for setting the government’s broad
agenda for broadcasting. At this point, managing the transition from analogue to
Digital free-to-air television is a government priority. I am sure the majority
of viewers who have already switched to digital will be enjoying a significant
improvement in their viewing experience, and government is not considering
the introduction of regulations governing picture quality at this stage.

In general, all inquiries regarding technical issues are best directed towards the
Relevant broadcaster. You will appreciate that under the Television New Zealand
Act 2003, I cannot intervene in the day-to-day operations of TVNZ. I am aware
There have been some recent technical problems resulting in pixilation, but these
are being addressed. I am informed the bit rate quality has remained within the
normal range since the introduction of TVNZ’s regionalized transmissions.

If you have any further questions regarding the issues you raised on your letter, I
Suggest you direct then to TVNZ or MediaWorks

Looks like we might be stuck with crap satellite digital TV in New Zealand.

Maybe we can contact their advertsiers with recorded examples of pixelated adverts? that might make TVNZ take notice!!!

Any one have any Ideas?

When the TVNZ Sports Extra channel finishes in July (?), won't this provide additional bandwidth on the Tp to restore the TVNZ channels to a decent bit-rate?

No, The TVNZ Extra Channel has already been removed from the satellite service & wasn't using much bandwidth anyway & more to the point TVNZ Have added a additional 3 channels (TV One) this is what is causing the drop in bitrate for all channels.

Raising issues with the advertisers might prove interesting, but in general I never see as many picture issues with the advert breaks as myPVR just skips them.

You best approach is with the broadcasters so they continue to be made aware of the issues. They appear to be placing a lot more focus on DTT than DTH.

Didn't I read somewhere that TVNZ have added delay between the different versions of TV1/TV2?
This will help improve the statistical multiplexing of the different regional versions of TV1 and TV2.

The reason you probably wouldn't see problems on local ads (if that is the case) is because the different channel versions would be showing different content, thus allowing a better spread of the available bandwidth.

I've been sending freeview samples and tech information for some time now, and I got the update yesterday about statmux upgrades and the time delay between regional feeds. Can't confirm the details for the time delays as I'm over in OZ this week, but Craig on the apsattv list couldn't see any difference.

Still saw some blatent pixelation during the show that had the brit guy dressing people tonight.

Bad pixelisation on Stratos this morning, so bad that the picture was unwatchable for the 10 minutes I watched it this morning. All other channels appeared to be OK.

Stratos get some programs from channels on Optus D2 - which are often broadcast at low-ish bitrates.

Being on satellite in my lounge now I can't handle that in HD where available logo that rubs it in your face whilst you're served up block city via sat with no surround sound.
