SuitedScooter: From what I have read elsewhere, the SBS feed was being broadcast via Sat from Melbourne to Tas while a new Fibre Cable was being laid (a cable was seen to be cheaper than Sat Link).

That cable is now laid and the service has been switched over, therefore the Sat link is no longer required.

Funny to think that if our government had of thought a little about the TVNZ Charter and spoken to the Oz Government, they could have said that we (NZ) would pay for the Sat Link as a replacement of TVNZ 7.

I'm sure that a Sat Link would be much cheaper than running a TV station. It would also have given NZ and Oz businesses a chance to advertise their wares to each other.

Another missed opportunity by our wonderful NZ politicians.

grrrrr

Nice idea but most of the documentary stuff would most likely be locked up by Sky..

I'm another one who is frustrated that SBS has disappeared from my tv. I called the company that installed my satellite dish last year. They seem to think that a new dish will solve the problem - I hope they are right!

That is correct, however the service it is now on at Optus C1 will be turned off as Australia will be using a new platform "VAST"

grolschie: Question: What is the legal status of obtaining Aurora smartcards for use in NZ? I would presume it's not legal, right?

I'm more interested in how to get one? Is it as simple as having a friend with an Aussie address who applies and pays a fee, or is there more to it than that?

OKhere is the Optus map for optimum dish size when receiving via an aurora smartcard rig.
If it is correct we would need at least 2.4m dish which seems a bit excessive.  Specially since some claim to have got a decent signal offa 90cm.

What is more worrying is that the indigenous people at the top of cape york can't get any signal no matter how big their dish is.  I have no idea where optus C1 hangs but it is difficult to believe that kiwis would be closer to it than the mob at weipa.
Altho come to think of it, weipa will prolly get a signal otherwise all the whitefellas at Rio Tinto would be up in arms.

The image in the post above probably applies to the channels on Optus C1 transponder 6 which uses the NA beam. The Aurora service also uses transponder 3 which uses the NANZ beam (similar to the transponder on Optus D1 that carried SBS Tazzie until last week). The channels on TP 3 are shown in the image below;

Try TradeMe or Ebay Australia if you want to get an STB with an Aurora smart card.

Hmmm ... so let's see:

1)  Additional dish needed pointing at C1 (or use dual-throat LNB with a single larger dish)

2)  Aurora-compatible smartcard needed

3)  No HD

4)  No 16:9

5)  The service is scheduled to disappear in 18 months max.

Is it really worth it?

This map shows the Optus C1 NANZ beam footprint;

Although the table would suggest that you need a 75cm dish to receive the signal, I'm getting it on a 60cm dish in Wellington. However I do sometimes suffer with rain fade.

The dual lnb's on some sky dish installs work for getting C1. One lnb is on D1 and the other lnb is on C1 ... you just need an Aurora card.

"Suitedscooter" ... now that is a name from the past !
are you the same person who had a web page for a certain tv tuner with a certain chip on it ?

So with the ever shrinking channel selection in NZ (Kidszone, TVNZ6, soon TVNZ7, Stratos, Go, Nine, SBS etc etc) I am seriously looking into what VAST could do to fill that gap.

Does anyone, who lives in NZ, has VAST over here?  If so any details of the experience, such as ordering, shipping, setting up, dish size etc?

Apart from Asiasat3 and Intelsat5 (which have reasonable up front costs) there isn't much choice for getting FTA TV any more in NZ :-(

UreKismet: OK.

This will be the footprint of the Optus C1 transponders that are broadcasting VAST.
I doubt whether VAST is a viable option in NZ.
