We were watching a show Last night on TV 2, during the entire show there was 2 minutes programme then 5 minutes Adv's that is
rediculous and quite typical of TV2.

That's a bit of an embellishment though, isn't it? BBT last night was 4 parts. First part was 7'04", 2nd part was 4'31", 3rd 5'03" and 4th part was 3'39".
The first ad break was 1'30". The second was 4'05". The 3rd was 4'45".

So that's a show of 20'17". Ad breaks total 10'20". That's still doesn't seem fantastic for the viewer, but it's a bit different from the claim of 2 minutes of programme.

When a broadcaster is sent a twenty minute long programme to fill a 30 minute slot, what are they to do? Fill the remainder with ads of course. Because that's how you pay the bills.

I didn't stop watch it I have ummm other more productive things to do  sheesh, still four breaks in a 20 minute programme

I didn't stopwatch it either, but there's a bit of a difference in estimating 2 minutes and nearly 4 minutes ;)

I used a degree of poetic licence to highlight that with the current trend on some FTA channels
one will be watching commercials occasionally interrupted by a programme.

The problem is that more and more people are evading ads by pre-recording, so the broadcasters are having to become increasingly aggressive at shoving ads down your throat. That's why, in my view, the current free-to-air commercial model is unsustainable - the degree of advertising penetration required to be profitable is beyond what viewers are willing to tolerate.

anybody know how much they charge for 30 second ad I think it's a very profitable commercial model

I just read the rate charge schedule for TVNZ

so between 6pm and 9:15pm you'll be hit with costs of between $7100 and 23500 multiply by number of ads shown then really it's a great little earner for TVNZ

oh and if your wondering about the $23k that's to have your ad run during NZs got talent

You can't assess profitability by  just looking at the revenue side of the equation. I suspect that the overheads and the cost of sourcing content are a lot higher than you might realise.

You plus1 lovers, get a recorder. You don't need to watch TV News at 6 or 7pm*.  Record it and watch it when you want to.

KiwiNZ your channel summary is sopt on, but where is the HD on Prime and the great foreign movies on MaoriTV?? Who wants to watch low bitrate 576i crap on a big screen??

People look to the Beeb as a licence funded model (and the Beeb is mainly good, but so are the advertising supported UK channels and so are many US production houses!). But there is a real difference in the arithmetic with 63M people in the UK compared to 4M here. Still a mixture of licence/state funding would get my vote. However... our government has been so right wing for so long that we are hardly gonna get anyone to legislate some sort of "nanny state" licence model, not even under a labour/green coalition.

So push for the "economic benefits" that unmetered fast broadband will bring, and polish up your proxy to netflix/iplayer and/or your torrent/newsgroup client.

* There is no news on anyway. Len Brown shagging some bimbo? Who cares? Where is Syria? Where is the UK selling their nuclear power plants to China?

I do have a recorder, a twin tuner, and we still end up recording from the +1 channels when there is a clash of times. I think they are good to have.

Having three tuners I never miss out, so the plus1 are simply the electronic equivalent of oxygen thieves from my point of view. Rather see the bandwidth go to Prime and MaoriTV being HD.

Also Maori TV is a waste of money.
Would rather it go to helping starship hospital or something.

KiwiNZ I don't get what you mean?

You say

KiwiNZ: It is no secret that New Zealand television sucks. It has been ruined by poor management and lack of any real competition.

KiwiNZ: Oh and another thing, for the love Jiminy Cricket can we just get rid of all the reality TV and rubbish talent shows and Shortland Street.

But NZCrusader can't raise his opinion about Maori TV and in so doing that you label him as a troll?

I think the only way to get better quality TV produced in NZ is to go down the BBC model.  Denmark only has a million or two more people than NZ but has a well supported state broadcaster and produces quality shows that are even sold overseas.  I've watched both Borgen and The Killing recently - Borgen especially could be a show that would translate well to a locally produced version with our coalition politics and a recent female PM.  The politics is probably too socialist for TVNZ to produce though .

Tellingly, the Danish state broadcaster does lots of things 'in-house', whereas both the BBC and TVNZ have gone through changes to outsource as many things as possible.  From the article: "A producer can get a backdrop made in minutes in the downstairs workshop, where, amid clouds of sawdust", in the modern BBC they would probably have to put a job like that out to tender, or the entire show itself is made by an independent broadcasting company who would then contract someone else to do the job.  Lots of short term contracts and less ability to call on "decades’ worth of accumulated institutional knowledge".

Cost - $500 NZD TV license per year.

We have no TV in the house: hire/buy DVDs and the kids watch a few shows on TVNZ on-demand on the laptop or ipad, and occasional BBC iplayer.

The last thing I want to see  again is any for of TV licensing..  I think in the UK anything that is capable of receiving any form of TV has to be licensed??

Both very good series, how many seasons of Borgen have you seen?

The Bridge is also very good, co-production between Denmark and Sweden. Now being copied in the US/Mexico and England/France.

Not prepared to pay $500 per year to get a public service channel that will effectively be a "horse designed by committee", and by trying to cater for every little interest group and faction is unlikely to screen much that I will want to watch. Would rather keep the money in my pocket and spend it on books, DVDs, theatre tickets, extra sky channels, console games, or any other entertainment that I choose to buy because it's what I want to watch/do.
