Last night TV1 and TV2 were pretty good I thought. TV3 looked rediculous during fast action scenes, like a resolution of 30 blocks across my screen by 25 bocks down, big pixels about 1.5cm square when anything fast moved on the screen, where as TV1 and TV2 looked pretty good I thought.

Have people noticed problems with TV3 on DVB-S before this, and are TV3 aware of any such issues?

Yes, but its been not as bad as 1 and 2 so a secondary issue.

I have watched 2 a bit over the last day and its a lot better, but still not where it should be for quality.

3+1 is by far the worst channel on there now - exluding the filler channels like stratos and cue etc...

I've heard a rumor that Sky are moving their HD content to Optus D2 in the near future, which will free up space for Freeview on D1 (Kordia getting tps i think)
Any one know anything?

Any release of D1 space by Sky would be used for additional SD channels. Their SD STB's can't use D3 + D1.

I now have a sample of the video issues from an advert that I'm planning on passing to TVNZ + freeview to see if that provokes a more positive response.

How bad is the macroblocking since TVNZ did the "upgrades"?
Is it just occasional? And are there still complete programs full of macroblocking & digital compression artefacts?
Every time I’ve tuned in on the STB I’ve only noticed occasional macroblock glitching (enough to be annoying when you know what to look for) I’ve still got my HTPC tuned in to the Sky TP & the picture quality is quite consistent (not great but good).

from what I have seen now, it is often giving a few frames of it during pans or scene changes - its not lingering as long as it was before but its still pretty offensive.

I alwasy thought that there was a way that they could only split out into different PIDs during commercials and the rest of the time all the regoins got the same data, but clearly thats not the case which is a shame.

Some time ago, before I tuned into the other transponder, the blocky artifacts seen while watching Lost and Chuck on a Wednesday night, and the generally poor picture during these shows, was getting very annoying for me at times.

I read in another thread that the HD Lost had film grain effect. Maybe this did not downscale too well to SD? Just a thought.

Sky's TV One HD feed (currently around 12mbit):

I wish it wasn't encrypted. :(

Just send my latest samples through to freeview, including a recent Nissan advert that looked pretty bad.

You should contact Nissan NZ as well, there are some contacts details on their website.

Also a reporter at the NZ Herald is interested in the Freeview Quality story as well.

What's the current state of play on the freeview TV1 / TV2 vs the sky feed? A few weeks back I deleted my freeview channel 1 and 2 and replaced these with the SKY version, just wondering if this still gives the better picture or if it's improved more on freeview now?

Are the pixelation problems improved these days? I see that the bitrates according to the satcodx website are a bit higher.

It comes down to more than bitrate. You need to look at the peaks as well. In general picture quality has improved as long as you don't watch TV3 PLUS1.
