Hi Team

I contacted Dan  at SBS  faults service and he assured me that SBS policy was NOT to transmit beyond Australian Boundries and if I had any concerns regarding transmission take it up with my  satellite carrier.

With that response i i was 80% SBS1 & 2 were lost forever , after reading this log I am just on 100%

So the question where to from here?

Yeah, it is a bummer, but this thread might be of interest:

Go through the thread again and look for references to Optus C1.  Most of what you are seeking has been covered.

Even though we used to receive SBS here in NZ as a “bonus” I think we should make a mobilisation and sign a petition to the NZ Government to offer the New Zealand citizens a better FTA programming.

We have ve lost SBS 1 and 2, and next month we'll lose NZ's best FTA channel (TVNZ7).

New Zealand viewers deserve some high quality programming.  Australia has 6 public broadcasters and from the 1st of July there will be none in NZ.

It’s not possible that the NZ Government is not concerned or worried about not having a decent FTA programming in the country.

Oh, it's quite possible.  NZ FTA is doing all the government wants - making a small profit and not stepping on any important corporate toes.

Though it pains me to say, given the deplorable state of NZ FTA, the provision of entertainment and enlightenment for the public at tax-payer expense must be a relatively low priority, especially in tough economic times.  Health, education, welfare, security, and infrastructure are higher priorities, and we don't even have the money to fund those properly.

Sadly, we may be getting all the FTA we can afford, and I for one was very grateful for the few crumbs that fell from the Australian table.

It's fair to say that those "few crumbs" were a real eye-opener as to what we are missing out on.  What pains me the most is that all of our broadcasters have access to these programmes, but:

-  They don't show them because they don't rate highly enough (read sell enough adverts)

-  They can get the same programmes that are many years old, presumably for a cheaper price (Top Gear episodes up to 9 years old are still showing on BBC Knowledge)

-  They have the rights "locked up" for a particular franchise so if they choose not to screen a particular series, nobody else in NZ is allowed to either.

The last one pains me the most.  It's like cutting off your nose to spite your face and doesn't help anybody in the long run.  Now at last, we the TV viewers in NZ have ways around these pathetic, money-grubbing and outdated practices foisted upon us by the rights holders.  VPNs FTW!

Unfortunately in NZ you get on FTA TV what's popular and going by the ratings which is what FTA lives by, junk is popular..

I'm put in mind of what P. T. Barnum said, something like:
"Nobody ever lost money underestimating the taste of the American people."
Much the same applies here I think.
Oh, and P.S.
As for NZ FTA:
"This way to the egress."

An industry insider told me recently that the audience is fragmenting so much that advertising is becoming increasingly difficult to sell.  His opinion is that there won't be any NZ-based FTA TV in 10 years time!

I don't think it will take that long.
Broadcast TV is a sunset industry anyway, and the current offering is just barely above the noise threshold.
It's dead already, it just won't lie down.

I wonder how long Freeview last until it gets sold off to some Fat Cat because it losses it's funding

Freeview is a cypher. It neither produces nor controls content. It neither owns nor controls transmission.
It came into existence only to give the guise of a unified FTA system to foster take up at their own expense by the public.
It is a brand with no substance. It does essentially nothing. Who would buy it? What use is it?
