I had an interesting event occur last night. I recorded 'The Goodies' off Comedy Central last night (Analogue/S-Video from Sky STB via PVR150, channel listings from Sky satellite EPG via HVR3000). On a recently reconfigured/reinstalled 7MC RTM and got an exclamation note with the recording advising that is was due to expire on 23 August 2009 at 20:59. Following this time, the recording now says that it has expired although it is still viewable (immediately after and this morning).

I have not seen this before with any of my other recordings from either FreeView or Sky (via STB) and it does not appear to limit/change anything. I do recall a digital rights management agreement (or similar) during the TV Signal setup in 7MC, however I am not sure this is the same thing, whether it is applicable to NZ or whether Sky are looking at controlling recording (would seem unlikely with their own PVR's on the market).

Anyone seen this or know anything about it?

After some more searching, I have found this specific for 7MC.

"What is copy protection and how does it affect me?
To prevent unauthorized distribution, some digital media files are protected with media usage rights. The rights specify how you can use the file—for example, whether you can sync the file to a portable device or play it on another computer. The terms of the rights are specified by the person or company that provided the file or the TV broadcaster that provided the content. Media Center can't play protected files unless you download rights for that content.

There are different ways to acquire media usage rights, but the most common way is to download them from content providers. The content provider might issue rights when you download the file. Otherwise, when you play a file that you do not have the rights for, Media Center attempts to acquire them automatically or prompts you to acquire them.

Additionally, some TV content might be marked as protected by the TV content owner, broadcaster, or originator. The terms of the content protection are specified by the content provider and transmitted with the TV show. If you record the show, the content protection terms are stored with the recorded TV file and enforced upon playback.

Some shows or portions of a recorded show might be restricted to play on the computer that they were recorded on. If you attempt to play the recorded TV file on another computer, you are notified that it is restricted content and you can't play it.

In addition, some protected media files or portions of files might have media usage rights that expire after a specified amount of time. If you try to access the media file after the rights expire, you are notified that the media file is no longer available."

The last paragraph is of the most interest. It would appear that Sky will be adding content protection to their programs that could limit how long you can view the recording or whether you can watch it on another PC. I have another 7MC machine on my network connected with HomeGroup. So I will see if i can view this recording on it tonight.

Also from Sky's MySky HDi documentation with regards to recording and storing content.

"Individual programmes may delete once the licence period has expired"

This may not relate to programs, more likely movies, but it does indicate that they are, or are going to, add expiration information for their TV broadcasts.

The Sky HDi DRM issue is different.

What's interesting is how Windows 7 is determining that there should be DRM on an analogue recording.

There is stuff in the VBI that flags things as protected or not. Not sure if its part of the macrovision messed up levels or sepreate, but I know that a macrovision remover allows you to record things off mysky that would make a dvd-r refuse to record.

I wasn't aware of the older PVR150 drivers even caring about any Macrovision flags in the past.

Obviously the new Windows 7 drivers must be different.

My PVR250 doesn't care about macrovision on Windows 7.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Just had a quick look through the event log and got this in the Media Center logs:
