I bought an ASUS RT-AC86U and signed up for 2degrees fibre (I've just moved houses, have never had a fibre connection before). I got an email from 2degrees yesterday saying the connection was setup, but for the life of me I can't get the router to connect to the internet. I've tried the various guides I've found, and setup the VLAN tagging under the LAN->IPTV section as everyone says to do. I've seen people on Geekzone saying that this router works on fibre with their ISP, but none of them seem to be on 2degrees...

Has anyone got one of these routers working on 2degrees? Exactly how is it configured?

Ok, thanks, that's what I thought it was supposed to be! To make sure I 100% have got this right.

  1. ONT cable to router runs from ONT LAN1 (which is showing a yellow light) to the router WAN port
  2. Reset to router defaults, setup SSID, WiFi password etc...
  3. WAN -> Internet Connection; WAN Connection Type = PPPoE; PPP Username and Password entered; no other settings changed Click to see full size
  4. LAN -> IPTV -> Select ISP Profile -> "Manual Setting"; Set "Internet" VID to 10 Click to see full size
  5. Settings applied
  6. Still no internet connection :(

Is it possible there's something wrong upstream? I filed a support ticket, but I haven't heard back yet. Maybe time to give them a call?

Yes, the username is [username]@snap.net.nz, per the email 2degrees sent me.

I've also looked in the system log, and searching from "wan" I see a bunch of "WAN Connection: Fail to connect with some issues" (super helpful). Also, "WAN Connection: ISP's DHCP did not function properly", and "warning: no upstream servers configured" from dnsmasq, but I don't know if they're just a symptom of the connection not being up.

It appears that similar routers with similar- / same-looking UI work properly, like the RT-AC68U, and there's a comment here [0] to the effect that following PBTech's instructions for that device works for the RT-AC86U, but that's for Spark, not 2degrees (though I think the settings are the same).

Are you sure that "LAN -> IPTV -> Select ISP Profile -> "Manual Setting"; Set "Internet" VID to 10" is actually configuring the WAN port to use VLAN 10? May want to check with Asus support to confirm it the modem actually supports VLAN tagging on the WAN port.

If it turns out it doesn't, and you absolutely want to use this modem, you can put a VLAN switch between your modem and ONT, such as the Netgear GS108E. This will tag all the packets with the correct VLAN. Note that I have never actually done this, but I've been told it's a solution.

Any opinions are my own and do not represent those of 2degrees

Are you sure it's LAN1 on the ONT? It may have been configured for another ISP.

No, I'm not. I honestly don't even know what that setting (or VLAN tagging in general) is actually supposed to do. I'm just going on the basis of people on this forum and someone on PBTech's site saying that this works - with the big caveat that none of them are talking about it working with 2degrees specifically. But on PBTech they have a guide for Spark / 2degrees / Slingshot all with the same settings, and a commenter there says that that guide applies to the RT-AC86U, too. And the UI certainly looks the same as in the PBTech guide.

I tried the other ports, and only LAN1 lights up. It was setup for vodafone before, that's about all I know about it. The 2degrees customer support says they don't see a problem, but that it's possible the ONT is not provisioned correctly. Trouble is, if I file a service request with Chorus and it turns out the setup is fine they can charge up to $140. For wasting their time, I guess. So I'm really trying to eliminate the ASUS as the problem.

It's making me wish I'd bought something else, or just gone with the stock device!

On the WAN page under Special Requirement from ISP what is "Enable VPN + DHCP connection" can you disable that?

Okay, it's likely LAN1 is the correct port then.

Would you try plugging your computer directly into the ONT, and see if it works?

  1. Set VLAN 10 on your network card. Each card is different so Google it.
  2. Start the PPPoE dialer on Windows.

Oh, well spotted. I turned it off, which unfortunately didn't help. Doesn't seem like something I'd expect to be on by default, though.

Ahh, now we might be making progress. I didn't even know this was a thing.

So I installed updated Intel drivers for my network card, which allowed me to create a VLAN Click to see full size

Then I used the PPPoE dialer you linked to, with the username and password. I got a failure with Error 615, and unfortunately not much more info Click to see full size

Assuming I did everything correctly (I double-checked the username and password) does this mean it's a problem upstream after all?

If the PPP dialer works then we can definitely say there's a router problem. But since it doesn't work there could be a problem somewhere else.

The 86 is the big brother of the 68 - same firmware, same configs, etc.

Here's snapshots of my confirmed working 2degrees config on the AsusWRT-Merlin build I'm using.

Also here's my IPTV page.

Sounds like something on the handover end isn't configured properly if your PPPoE dialer isn't connecting, give 2degrees a call and let them know you can't authenticate against them, and hopefully you'll get someone helpful who can sort it.

Have you got the 2degrees fritzbox to experiment with? If the connection doesn't work with that, points to a Chorus issue.
