As per stuff.co.nz,....

"Mobile provider 2degrees plans to open more than eight retail stores in the next year as it gears up to launch its 3G service and offer post-paid plans.

The firm is negotiating leases for stores in central Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch and eyeing up potential sites in Hamilton, Palmerston North, Tauranga, Nelson and Dunedin.

It has signalled its plans to offer a 3G service and to start signing customers up to contracts rather than offering pre-pay services only."

More ... http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/3915716/2degrees-plans-to-launch-3G-service

So we need to wait a little longer, unless 2D is willing to open some kind of trial of their 3G network for geekzone users Cool

Cheers

Lee

I'm willing to wait for the official word from a 2degrees representative before jumping to that conclusion. The article linked is far from clear on a launch date for 3G - the link between retail stores and the 3G launch is tenuous.

We all know that 3G has been live for 2degrees staff for some time, from this you have to assume that contracts for 3G roaming have been tied up (or are close to) with Vodafone as well.

The introduction of data packs is the first real interest we have seen from 2degrees in attracting and retaining the data user client-base. I suppose the logical question is whether launching a full scale 3G network requires on-account as a pre-requisite. I'm not sure it does ...

Anyway, lets wait for some confirmation.

The person quoted "Bryony Hilless" must be involved in the retail development side of the company in some way to be allowed to comment at all.

Im working on the general concept of 2D making small and positive steps. They have not released anything to the general public until they have been able to support it 100%

While I assume there is some creative licence by the author, "in the next year as it gears up for" would seem to suggest a bit further away than 3 months.

Either way im a very happy 2D customer.

"in the next year as it gears up for", are the author's words, not Bryony Hilless. At least it appears so from the article.

The last official, specific word on 3G is here ... http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=8539 ... "throughout 2010".

It would be nice to have an official update, even if it were simply to confirm 3G will come before year end.

What I'm hoping (but doubting I will) to see is a 3G "where we have our own cellsites only" data service that's competitive with at least small (~1GB cap) fixed line data connections.  Voice with a local number would be nice, too.  That'd eat into the rather large market of people with small-cap, slow DSL connections, which includes quite a few of my friends.

well that's not quite true.  Their website was down for quite a few weeks after they launched.

I must have been lucky and totally missed that issue. Oh well, lets say, they generally get it right.

No, that *is* true. All our iPads here have microSIMs in them.

Thanks for the support. I'd love to have access to their 3G service, if not to use those 50MB packs I have in my acocunt on my Android devices more rapidly...

I am glad I'm not the only one who spells account that way...

By MicroSIM, do you mean with the aid of a scalpel?

I'll happily connect my iPad to 2 Degrees once they have Micro SIMs, 3G and an affordable 500Mb+ data plan. It sounds like they're well on their way to getting there.

iPads are dangerous to your wallet. I'm sitting here listening to Storm Front on my iPod, and I think to myself, "Hey, I used to have that Billy Joel concert live from Leningrad CD when I was in high school, that was awesome..." and 30 seconds later I was downloading it over 3G.

30 seconds after *that* I'm looking at the track list as it downloads, see "Big Man on Mulberry St" and think yeah, I used to have that CD too, and --NOOOO.

It's not the data charges you gotta watch out for!

During the first five or so weeks after launch "My 2degrees" was unavailable because it was discovered you could see other people's details.
