"*WiFi Hotspot: please note that the first software release for the X5 does not contain the Android WiFi 'Hotspot' feature meaning that your X5 cannot act as a WiFi Hotspot for other devices (e.g. laptop) to share its mobile data connection. However the standard WiFi function of the X5 itself is unaffected and works very well. There will be a subsequent software release in April/May which will add the WiFi Hotspot function and we will contact all 2degrees users to provide simple upgrade instructions."

Just wondering if anyone from 2Degrees could update us on the time frames around this as the new ROM is also supposed to improve Wifi? The new ROM is up on the www.Huaweidevice.com website

U8800 V100R001C17B160CUSTC17D002 is available on Huawei's china website for China Unicom customers on Monday 2nd of May. According to the description, it has added WiFi hotspot function. I think English version is not too far away. I don't want to post the link because it may be incompatible with NZ sold X5.

Well May ends tomorrow so running out of time ;o)

Can't we just have the zip file uploaded here and we can install ourselves?

I'm hoping that Wifi is improved as well as the hotspot option as it does seem to be by all accounts in the B160 release they are using on XDA

C'mon 2degrees, let's have some visibility on this! Your web site *still* says April/May on the X5's details page.

If you need testers, then PM some of the responders to this topic, I'm sure that at least some of us will be willing to have a go.

Although I did get tired of waiting around and just downloaded the B136 update file straight off the Huawei website.
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=74072&page_no=27#473879
It has been working flawlessly, and IMO quite noticeably more responsive than the B133 that came on the phone.
Still 2.2.1, but it has Wi-Fi tether.
We can only assume that this is the one that 2Degrees will be officially rolling out to customers eventually.

Some Swype issues (haven't been able to successfully load it on quite yet), but I am actually just rolling with the stock keyboard at the moment. It's actually not too bad.
I've noticed that it "pops-up" the letter that it has sensed that you have selected just above your finger, similar to what the iPhone does. Swype doesn't do this when "pecking". It's actually quite useful.

Still hoping for a stable CM7 port soon though.

Hey 2Degrees, you've gone strangely quiet as the end of May approaches.
Last day of May - can we at least get an update please? PS your helpdesk staff aren't helpful on this topic - I got referred to contact Huawei directly.

I got mine a couple of days ago - it's a review unit sent from Oz, but using VFNZ SIM.

"The Wi-Fi hotspot software has been successfully tested and we are now finalising the upgrade process. We expect to post upgrade details and notify users by June 10th."

Well, June 10th is better than no news at all.  A bit frustrating that 2D would have participated in this forum thread earlier but not posted that information (or even "an update is available on our website") here..

Does anyone have an idea as to what version build the update might be, or what will be in the update?  We know about the wifi-tether, but we also know that it works fine and has been available for a while via Huawei Chinese section and of course other handset makers.  I'm interested in;

  • stability and performance updates,

  • wifi improvements (I believe this handset suffers from a known broadcom chipset driver issue, although that's my guess based on observed behaviour)

  • colour menu icons (look great on other phones, are they gingerbread/v2.3?)

  • standard app updates (f/b, market, maps, camera etc)

Geez, now I can't wait till June 10th!!
