My question will betray the fact that I'm no expert!
Some time ago I made a website for the organisation I work for, using Website X5 Evolution version 7. It is hosted for free by Snap, our ISP (I don't think they offer free web hosting any longer, but they did once).
I am currently updating the site using version 9 of the same program. I want to incorporate such things as email forms that visitors to the website can complete and submit, without the need for writing an email separately.
This function doesn't work using the present hosting arrangement. Am I correct in thinking that I need a web host that offers PHP (not that I even understand what that means!)? If not, what do I need?

It depends what the processor uses. PHP is server side scripting as apposed to being rendered by the browser. You will certainly need a server side technology (PHP being one of the most popular) to host the script locally. Being server side gives you much more powerful functions. What extension does the form processor end in? If it is .php you will need a php enabled host.

PHP is probably the most widespread and easiest scripting language. You will need to sue something server side for your form so PHP is probably a good option as its widely supported by many hosting companies. Snap should be able to do it but please PM me if not.

If you only need a server-side technology just for a contact form, you may be better to integrate with a third party just for that, saves you swapping hosts.
