I don't want to consume a license just for the server manager, so I was wondering if I could use the existing 2008 server manager or if not, is the a management console install for workstation (Win 7), if the latter, can anyone advise what it is called on the MSDN search?

Download should complete in a couple of hours so I should be able to answer the first question myself quite soon.

Afaik it is not. You need to use windows 8, and download and install server manager, or another server 2012.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

There is a free 3rd party management tool available.

I think that 3rd party tool is just for Hyper-V

server manager 2012 only runs on 2012 itself or Windows 8, so you'll need to run it from there or RDP into one of those OSes from your Win7

I can confirm that the previous version of server manager is not compatible. I have another 2012 standard (GUI) instance and I was able to connect using that, and discovered the significantly more powerful remote management features of 2012.
