Currently I have a couple of domains registered with GoDaddy and have done for the past couple of years, but I'm wondering if GoDaddy's renewal costs are becoming a little expensive.
They obviously welcome you in with a lovely $1 for the first year type deal, then the cost goes up to anywhere between $14-$50 depending on the type of domain you own.

is there any decent registrars out there, with relatively low renewal costs and allow NS changes? I host my DNS through cloudflare.

I have all my non nz ones thru 101domain because they had the tld I wanted. Really for the price of a domain registration its not worth going too cheap as has been shown recently on here.

Yes they get you with a cheap initial registration and the future renewal prices are then a lot higher. Although this is now becoming more and more common, as there isn't really any money in domain names. They do however seem to have put their prices up recently unless you can find a coupon. If you do want good personal customer support, the more expensive ones do have better support. The cheap ones tend have have rubbish support I have found. I have found godaddys support to be quite good, and certainly better than some I have tried. One charged me a huge redemption fee to renew the domain, only 7 days after the domain had expired, while many only charge it after 30 days.

I can recommend 247 (not).

In other words, don't go too cheap. I use iServe (now Orcon Business) but you might want to look at IWantMyName.

Completely agree. I'm not wanting the cheapest and dirtiest, but cheaper, but still somewhat decent would be nice.

My main issue with godaddy isn't the ppice, but the upselling they do, where you have to often go through screens of other products. Although this too is becoming common with other providers too. Infact many of the cheap ones now do gogdaddy type upselling.

Just having a look around, I've come across two different providers which I'm considering. For comparison, .com renewal from GoDaddy is around $15US, renewal from dynadot.com is $10US and the same from domainmonster.com

May end up going with Dynadot. so far I've read some good stuff, though still reading.

Edit: another option I am looking at is also namecheap.com, which is around $11US for renewal.

I use domains4less.co.nz for .nz. Never had a problem with them. And namecheap.com for SSL and .com/net etc. Again never had a problem with them

How many 100 domains do you have that this messing around for a few dollars per domain per year is worth it?

At the moment, we are talking about just under 10. So it's a saving of around $35 or so a year, overall, however, I may very well go over that 10 mark soon.

To be honest, I wanted to see what was available first, then decide later if a decent option presented itself.

It's very little effort to transfer a domain and change name servers, so not concerned about that.

dnssimple for a .com

domains4less or 1stdomains for .co.nz

One of the web developers recently wrote a blog post of comparison between godaddy's constant upselling when he was with them and signup experience with dnssimple.

I have a .co.nz with godaddy only because I had some leftover credit with them. I will be moving to domains4less soon since I already have another .co.nz with them and its cheap.

For that small amount I don't think it is worth it. Transferring .coms can be a PITA and will use quite a bit of time, and there is then no guarantee that the registrar that you transfer to won't put up their prices either. Plus if you search for coupons you may find a code to give you a discount if you renew them all in one go, if you spend over a certain amount.

Namecheap.com for international addresses. I use either 1st domains or Discount Domains NZ for NZ addresses. Don't use discountdomainsuk.com, they're awful - they don't reply to emails, and they charge a fortune to transfer a domain out. You can work around them with nominet though.
