I am wanting to get a website built for a retail store my wife has and was wanting to know where I can go to get it done. I have a budget of $500 - $1000 and once it is done we would want to do the ongoing updates ourselves. It will be accepting sales from the website and the products need to be updated each month. I was thinking of having a excel or access DB setup will all products, pricing and images in it so I can update the database offline and upload it to the site. I dont need hosing as that is already taken care of. So can anyone recommend someone or business and also the reason why you recommend them. Much appricited everyone.

Check Silverstripe - free open source project made in Wellington.

As for database, I used Access behind Geekzone for a year, serving up to a few thousand pages a day - we migrated to SQL Server when we crossed the 80,000 page views/day a few years ago. Access will work, but updating the file and uploading will introduce some problems with the file being in use. To go around this try aspAccessEditor.

If you do not go with a free software, I recommend you start using the SQL Server though, for better management and scale - perhaps their free SQL Express version?

The new ecommerce module that Silverstripe has is pretty cool - Tim (Dev Manager from Silverstripe) ran me through it's features and it looks really, really good.

You just need to find a web-hoster that will support it, PM if you want us to help you out.

could always try out ediy.co.nz which comes with a range of templates which are easily changable.  Alas this option is not free.  You pay more per month depending on what you want.

Otherwise you can sometimes find talented young designers fresh from course who will build a website cheap.  This has proven useful to me in the past.  Just phone the local design schools and chat with the teacher about who they think would be interested.

I am now looking towards larger customized websites, via elance.com, where you open a project on what you require, and people bid for the work.  This can be a bit anoying as most of the developers are form India, but thankfully most of these companies have strong english speaking project managers which you deal with.

Happy hunting =)

Most any "ecommerce" system will allow you to import your products from a comma delimited file (which you can simply save/export from your favourite spreadsheet).

Avoid OSCommerce (and it's derivative, ZenCart) like the plague, as a coder, I wouldn't touch those (again) with a 50 ft barge pole if it can be avoided.

Go with a PHP system because you will have a large pool of developers to pull from if necessary in the future (and the hosting will be cheaper and more reliable for the price). Similarly, use MySQL, for the same reasons. For your purposes, both technologies will serve you just fine.

I'd suggest you approach a design company or freelance web designer as they will be able to guide you through the project and effectively be your project-manager as well as making the site look good, feel free to contact me off board if you want some recommendations.
