I am looking for a DVD drive to replace the one on the Geekzone server. This is an Acer 1U server, and I am told a standard notebook DVD drive is all we need.

Any brand suggestion? Where to find in Wellington?

On the assumption that you don't need to boot off it and that it's not for others to pop disks in for you ...

Could you utilise something that transfers via USB? i use a USB -> IDE / SATA converter plugged into a normal 3.5" DVD drive...

You probably could boot off it if you the BIOS will boot off USB attached drives.

FWIW, I usually copy the installation disks onto my servers (either raw files or as an ISO) and utilise it that way.

Of course ... I think I'm missing the point, as I assume this is related to last weeks outage ... if so, my comments are probably not helpful...

Could always use an USB-powered DVD drive. Like LG GSA-E50L and priced at $141.50. And most BIOS these days can boot off USB devices.

The server did not have a DVD drive, because everything was deployed over the network. But as part of the new backups I've created recovery discs, so we must boot off of the drive. This Acer server is about two years old - it should boot from USB, but I rather have an internal drive.

That's why I would try to get an original one from the manufacturer first.
