Hey guys,

I've just bought a domain through domaindirect and found out I have to pay extra for creating TXT records...

Based on your guys comments in other threads I was going to transfer it to metaname but when I do I get the error:

"Name cannot be transferred because it is within its registration grace period"

My googling says this grace period is 60 days - is this correct? I really dont want to have to pay for their stupid premium DNS.

Can you just cancel and then buy through the new provider.

I dont think so, there doesn't seem to be any functions on their site to do it and nothing in their help files that mentions cancelling a domain.

5 days for .nz

There is (should be) also a cancellation allowance within this grace.

Just have to wait it out before transfer

7.11 There is a grace period of five days upon a domain name first being registered, during which time the Registrar may cancel the registration.

7.12 Where the domain name is cancelled during the grace period it will be removed from the Register. The registration and cancellation will still be recorded for audit purposes. The same Registrar is able to re-register the same domain name but it is not able to be cancelled for a second time within one month of the initial registration.

7.13 A Registrant will not be able to transfer the management of its domain name to another Registrar during the grace period.

Don't quote me on it though. US based registrars may snub that and go for the longer period.

If it's paid for and manageable. You should have a control panel to log into and immediately cancel.

Do you mean domainsdirect.co.nz ? On their webpage they mentioned a free DNS editor that you can set a TXT record.

What about use Cloudflare as your DNS server and follow the instruction on https://www.domainsdirect.nz/guides/how-to-change-your-nameservers to change the NS record, then use Cloudflare to set the TXT record?

Here yes, but I'm unsure if the NZ Register processes extend to offshore sellers?. I know we have better rules for squatting with some ISPs doing crazy 240day holds and super pricey redemption fees etc.

I find it very difficult to believe that any registrar could charge for adding TXT records. They're essential for a few different things. Have you called them to verify this?

The comment about CloudFlare was a good one. Domain registration and providing DNS are two separate things, though many providers offer both. Just register with CloudFlare, then at your registrar specify the CloudFlare name servers they give you when you set up your account.

Timmmay is right, they are wanting to charge you for being your DNS, you do not need to use them for this, you will just need to point your name records to your new DNS host (potentially Cloudflare being a good option)

Heres a screenshot of the ad to show you have to pay for the premium tools to get TXT records - its a yearly fee.

Ill check out cloudflare but will probably transfer it to metaname, I'm not a web developer and I can count the number of webpages I have done for friends one one hand so probably don't want more services than I need. I just use the spare $$ on my MSDN subscription to host the odd website for friends.

Plus charging a yearly fee for txt records is pretty sad, don't really want to support that kind of behavior.

Just use a free DNS provider like Cloudflare - far better UI, more reliable, more fully featured & makes future domain transfers more straightforward because your DNS zone isn't dropped/disabled/deleted by the domain registrar when doing a domain transfer away.

It's probably more that domainsdirect.nz is reselling Crazydomains currently and they charge for "Advanced" DNS config stuff as an "addon".
