Zoho have dropped forwarding, POP and IMAP for free accounts. Does anyone else have suggestions for alternatives in this space that are free or cheaper than Zoho? (Which is still a reasonable price). Something that also has SMTP access.

You can have free, or you can have good. Zoho, FastMail, Google for Business, Office 365, all reputable and quite cheap. You want cheaper you're getting into second tier. Fastmail is what I use, cheaper than some of the others, maybe not cheaper than Zoho.
I use MXRoute, after a recommendation from someone on here. They support SMTP and IMAP, and have good online support - they're a small provide based in USA.
Their spam rejection can be quite strict, and isn't user-adjustable
Otherwise, they have been very good. And very cheap
rhy7s: Sorry, should have said, to use for domain email.
Umbrellar - Nz based - around $5 per month. Who cant afford $1 per week? THat's if you only want one smtp out account.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.
HostingNZ has pretty cheap email plans - https://hostingnz.co.nz/email-hosting
IMAP/POP3/SMTP/Email Forwarding etc
For new accounts
CYaBro:
Is that for existing zoho free accounts as well?
Or just any new ones created now?
Yeah, should have also clarified, not really worried about the final email destination. Primarily looking for forwarding with the bonus of SMTP from the same provider (preferably without having to use a per app password). For example, in reference to Fastmail, like pobox.com which is part of the Fastmail family now. A lot of email only services get more expensive than generic hosting after more than a couple of users.

They do look like a good option.
