I don't use Google search much these days. I am using Duck Duck Go.
So it came as a bit of a surprise in the last few days when I had to use Google Search itself that a captcha comes up a lot of the time now, requiring you to tick "I am not a Robot" and occasionally having to click boxes with parts of photographs to prove I am a human.

Is this a recent thing?

This is normally a flag when googles picked up iffy looking queries from your IP.

Every time it's happened for me (like 3 or 4 times), I've traced it back to malware running on a certain machine....

If you go there with no cookies you will often get that. Once you have done a few you will be fine till your cookies get erased.

Or you are accessing from an IP range with a bad reputation.
