Has anyone used a software product called Shavlik Netchk Protect to process updates,
not only for MS products but for third party vendors as well? Is it good for smaller networks?

I haven't used this but I remember they are the guys providing the technology for a Microsoft tool used to check patch levels for computers in a network. I've used that tool (anyone remember the name) and it was quite good.

Thats what this product does in a nutshell, just wondering if it is all the make it out to be.
After some software to control patch managment across a virtual and physical network that runs multiple
application products. Any ideas??

I have used the 'home user' version of the Shavlik products, from a magazine CD trial, and the software works quite well. It's similar to the new SUS for Windows I guess... Shavlik tracks applications installed though, verus just Windows applications.

So Shavlik should notify you of updates for Acrobat/Reader, Firefox, Thunderbird, and various other popular 3rd party applications that run in Windows.

Yes, that would be Microsoft Baseline Security Analyser (MBSA) / HFNetChk.exe. Version 1.2.1 was based on the Shavlik engine, then MS wrote their own engine for v2.0.

These days we use WSUS for keeping Windows machines patched.
