Hi,

My webhost (iServe aka KiwiWbHost) for the past 4 years is suddenly very unreliable and nonresponsive to my questions.

Looks like it is time to consider moving.

I would appreciate recommendations from people who run sites with MySQL db under Perl CGI scripts on Apache so at least I can minimise the trauma.

Thanks!

I live and swear by US-based DreamHost.

I can also recommend ResellerZoom in the states having been with them for 4 years but if you are not wanting to become a reseller look at their associated company HostingZoom.com.

+1 for DreamHost. Been with them since 2006. Great stuff (most of the time), even better support.

I wonder if that is because they were just bought by Orcon?

How do you guys find hosting stuff in the states when it comes to hostplatform upgrades / maintanance as their midnight is our daytime? Anyone ever had prolonged downtime with this?

Never had prolonged downtime.. The few times that massive/prolonged upgrades have been needed they simply move you to another server.

Dreamhost - a few years ago I signed up for a promotional rate of $7USD for 1 year and it turned out to have been a bad investment! I ended up just using it as an FTP server. Things may have improved since then, but their control panel was buggy, you had to wait overnight for some changes to happen and their 'one click installs' were anything but.

I have used ICDSoft.com for 7 years and would have no hesitation in recommending them. They do not have any servers in this part of the world (their servers are in Hong Kong and USA), but they are cheap and I have honestly not had a better support experience from any company. Their average response time for issues I have raised has been under five minutes!
