I would like to move a client from Nero Back It Up Express to something more reliable.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a simple, reliable backup to CD/DVD software to replace it?

My advice would be to skip the DVD/CD part and move to an external hard drive.

What OS does this client use?

Yeah that is one option that we might have to move to if this isn't workable

Running Windows Server 2003.

I haven't really dealt with Windows Server 2003 at all, but I use SyncToy on Windows 7 for my personal backup onto an external drive.

I'm not sure if that would work for your client's circumstances, but it might be worth looking into.

They require backup of databases (Interbase) and other files that may still be in use.

Does SyncToy backup databases? Or open files?

May have to go down the NTBackup scheduled task and USB drive path.

These are the issues we have been having:

- Drive not auto ejecting after backup
- Nero services needing restarting (errors when trying to access administration console)
- Backups failing with CRC errors - however drive checks out fine with sustained burning

The client wants a solution that doesn't need require "tending to"

How frequent is the backup? and how much data involved? doesn't seem like much if it fits on one cd/dvd.

Nero does not backup in-use files anyway, does it? is it really a requirement?

My guess is interbase will be configured to create its own backups - and the existing backup solution just backs up those backups rather than actually back up a live database.

Backup is nightly.

Will look into the option of online backup, have to confirm amount of data (i cant remember how much/little they have) and their internet data cap.

Unfortunately, Interbase is running on a older version. It is used to run medical software (MedTech32) and they only introduced backup plans into their versions of Interbase 2007 and 2009. Due to it not being our software we are unable to make changes to it - even for backups.

Thanks guys - looks like the old backup to CD strategy is dead/dying!

It's a good time to offer an inventory of everything they need to back up, and a one off restore verification process (maybe performed in virtualization) to prove the strategy is effective. No point having backups that don't contain the data needed, no point having backups which cannot be restored, and a very unwelcome surprise in the event backups require a major clean up before even a partial restore is possible.

It is very likely their current strategy has at least one of these results.

I realise I'm a bit late and this is quite possibly sorted by now, but just in case, I highly recommend BackupAssist. I've used it on heaps of small-medium sized sites (including some writing to CD) and it's always worked brilliantly.

With the additional drive (or even network drive) one might try the inbuilt NTBackup? Set a base image each week with incrimentals each night?

If you care about the data, I wouldn't recommend ntbackup on it's own. It can't email you if backups fail, and they fail all too often.

I'm also none too keen on harddisks for backups, I would much prefer CD, tape or cloud, but each to his own.
