Is there any resource around where you can find out how a particular website ranks against others in terms of number of visitors?

AC Nielsen probably have better NZ stats but likely you have to pay megabucks for access to their reports.

Nielsen will have something, but it's only visible to members or paying public. I have removed Geekzone from Nielse a couple of months ago though because it's expensive for publishers. However they do list ONLY New Zealand sites. In that list Geekzone was on top 40 based on unique browsers.

Alexa is an indicator but it's flawed in that's not based on data collected by publishers but by sampling. Also it lists web sites ranking *in* New Zealand, but not New Zealand only sites.

Quantcast is ok, but like Alexa only good if the publishers are running their code. For example as of May 2011 Quantcast lists Geekzone as #22 in New Zealand (https://www.quantcast.com/geekzone.co.nz), but we are running their code. Before that we were number 2,500 - that's how wild is the range. And if sites are not "quantified" then comparison is useless.

Mauricio, does that mean they only rank sites that pay for inclusion?
I'm after something that it not influenced at all by whether sites pay anything or whether they have particular code embedded.
So, is there no independant global monitoring of site visits?

What is a NZ site? One that is hosted here, or one where the owner is domiciled here?

Correct. Nielsen only ranks the sites who pay them a monthly fee.

Alexa then. But again their numbers are very influenced by people using their toolbar for example, which seems to be quite popular in Asia. That would explain why most of the top New Zealand sites in their list are Korean and Chinese sites.

Quantcast, comScore. But they use site tracking codes, and since not every site uses them, it's hard to get consistent results.

A "New Zealand" site should be one that is owned by a local publisher, regardless where it's hosted. When you look at Alexa they list sites visited by New Zealanders (with the previous caveat), not a local market landscape.

It seems Alexa is closest to what I want, but there is noise from international sites :-(

The bottom line is stats come from users web browser "clickstream" data usually from toolbars/addons or javascript code included in websites.

It will never be accurate because many people don't use those toolbars/addons and many sites don't include quantcast/nielsen code in their site.

It's just like tv ratings an extrapolated illusion geared towards selling advertising with little basis in reality.

Google would actually have the best stats since practically every website runes google analytics and/or ads, but they don't publish data for NZ.

Except New Zealand is not in the list...

And even if they did, if you are one of the 1000's who don't come in the top 100 you don't get reported anyway.
